Which .30 cal would you choose?

This gun would be used for backpack hunting bear, elk and deer with an approximate max range of 1000 yds.

Here are the specs I'm thinking of.

26" carbon barrel.
6-7 lb rifle before optics.
Would like to use 215 Bergers.
Prefer it to fit in a factory Tikka magazine.

What do you guys think?

300 win mag. Period. And especially with the 215 bergers. Kind a like whisky and a ribeye--they are just made to go together.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Sam,
That's kinda what I was thinking. I've been leaning pretty hard toward the .300 win mag, so I'm glad you guys agree.

AK Troutbum,
I already have a Tikka 300 wsm on the way so I didn't really want another one.

We were shooting a Tikka in 300 Win this week of a similar weight. I would consider a substantial muzzle break. It had remarkably more recoil than my 13 pound 300 WM.

The 300 win with a 215 Berger is one of the most impressive rounds you can get in 30 cal and under. Great brass selection, very efficient with the long history of the inherent accuracy. Easy to find a good selection of factory ammo if you should ever need it. Great feeding capabilities and good case extraction. The 215 with it's short bearing surface and hybrid ogive produces accuracy, velocity along with low drift and low velocity drop from the 300 win. Like Randy said, a great combination for sure.

It will have a brake for sure. I prefer brakes on all rifles.

I need to brake it, bed it, trigger it first. By then it is just walk out the door and shoot. But first I have to pick it up from my son who is 3 1/2 hours away. But soon though.

300 rum with 210 bergers. To beat those ballistics you have to jump up into the 338 lapua. The 7wsm with 180 bergers are deadly also. 300 rum is a tough round to beat for long range.

The 300 RUM doesn't fit in a Tikka magazine. Plus I think the .300 win mag is a better match for a light weight mountain rifle.
