Which 22 cal?

I’m looking to add a 22 cal to my stable of rifles. Looking specifically for a bolt gun that would be used for target, varmint and maybe pronghorn/deer. I’m leaning towards 22 creedmoor. Are there other cartridges I should be considering? I am not a reloader so factory ammo availability is a consideration.

Thanks in advance.

There are numerous but considering you said factory ammo is a must it would largely depend on what bullets you want to shoot.

I'm a 22-250 fan but I don't know that you will find much if any ammo for it that isn't loaded with lighter varmint bullets which would be fine for everything you mentioned except deer.

The factory 22 Creedmoor ammo is geared more around using the heavier 22cal bullets so you're on the right track with wanting to add one of those.

Even though I'm a fan of the 22-250 for the purposes you've described and the need for factory ammo Hornady's new 22 ARC would either be my first choice or a coin flip between it and the 22 Creed.

There's always the 223 which probably has the widest range of factory ammo available for it and if you don't already have one everyone needs at least one if not three or four 223's. :)

Well.. even out here in Commiefornia... SoCal Metro OC... I'm seeing them offering at Turner's the .22 ARC in the Ruger American Gen II 20" bbl.

They do not yet list any 22 ARC ammo offerings though.

They have neither rifle or ammo offerings in .22 Creed yet.

That 22 ARC is supposed to be near to 22-250 speeds. And the creed able to go a little faster still than the ARC. If I remember right.

And bonus, it's offered in AR15 uppers. So knowing that might also influence your choice if you happen to already have an AR and like the idea of one cartridge working for you in both setups.

You need a nice heavy .223 to go with a couple of light weight 223's.

I wouldnt look at anything else until you have taken care of your lack of 223's

I’d vote 22 ARC. They are now loading a 70gr CX option that would work for everything you mentioned.

223. Cheapest to shoot, easiest to buy ammo for, least recoil, and longest barrel life. Hands down the best thing I have ever done to improve my shooting.

Since you are not a reloader I'd look no farther than a fast twisted 223.

The range of bullet weights and styles avaliable trumps everything else. Plus decent inexpensive practice ammo is everywhere

I got a multitude of 22 creed kills on coyotes and hogs shooting anywhere from 52gr Hammer dead blows up to 75gr ELDMs.

Here is my page with the videos.
