Ive hunted all the areas in the 2nd pick slick posted. Be prepared if your into elk to have a war party ride in on horseback at first light after you packed in 7 miles the night before.

In all seriousness these would be spots to get away from crowds, backpack in as far as you wanted, there are elk in each of those 6 districts, is very scenic.... but NOT what I would recommend for a first elk hunt if you're trying to be successful.

Not the parts of the Bob I've been to. More horse traffic than a rodeo.

I'm by no means an expert on this subject, as I have only one year experience hunting elk. But this is what I will offer up. Take everything you read about crowds with a grain of salt. I archery hunted one of the most popular units in one of the most popular states for elk. I never saw another hunter while I was actually hunting. I only ran into people at the trailhead. In fact, it was rare to see more than one or two vehicles parked at a trail head at any given time.

Second, might want to rethink going in 5-10 miles, unless you have a horse. 5-10 miles is a LONG WAY in the mtns. Unless you have a horse, I highly doubt that you could pack an elk out 10 miles before the meat spoiled. Also, if you walk 10 miles in, you are walking past a lot of good elk country. The furtherest I hunted from the trail was 2 miles. I had elk sightings from .5-2 miles from trail head. Biggest bull I saw was just over .5 mile up the mtn from a major FS road. In my area, once you hit 5 or 6 miles back, you were running into outfitters/drop camps. So you really wouldn't have all that much solitude the further back you went. I had the woods all to myself where I hunted. I was on elk and I rarely walked more than a mile or so from the trail.

Go out there, have fun and soak it all up.

If you want remote, few people, a chance at a big Montana bull in the backcountry and a rugged mountainous experience check out areas around unit 121 in Montana and the cabinet wilderness. Rugged as it gets👍 I seldom run into anyone off a trail this country is as steep as it gets, and will beat you up👊 But you will come back for more if you truly love a tough hunt that offers the total back country experience.

In some parts for sure. However, there are areas in the Bob that have trails that haven't been cleared in 30 years.

There is solitude back there, but it is not a practical backpack hunt.

Most new elk hunters I have talked to have had much greater success and more positive experiences by looking closer to the road system.

CO is the most crowded state for hunting, no doubt, I would suggest ID, WY, MT. Can you hunt CO and not stumble into hunter after hunter? Yes, but the odds of doing it favor ID, WY, MT.

If you can't find a spot to be alone in some of the largest expanses of wilderness in the lower 48, you aren't trying very hard
