So I bought a stone glacier serac for a day pack and told myself I would buy a bigger bag someday for extended over night trips. As I load my Serac with my day pack gear I find myself with plenty of room to spare for extra clothes and such. Then I got even crazier and loaded a duffle bag full clothes/gear on the meat shelf. I swear I could stay in the mountains a week out of that 1700 ci pack. Obviously adding the meat shelf the pack is around 4000ci but still it's crazy. So I ask you guys, how many cubic inches is your minimum when looking for a pack? I'd say 4000 would fit every piece of hunting gear I own/use.

5500 ci is the smallest that works for me and I much prefer bags in the 7 to 8k range. FOOD takes up 1/3 of my pack space on 10 to 14 plus day trips, add the items needed for staying safe here in Alaska and I can't just get it all in a smaller bag.

I have never wished I had a smaller bag, but I have wished I had a larger one.

The weight difference between a 2500 and 7500 cu in pack is usually .5 to .75 pounds on most packs....hardly makes it worth owning the smaller one as the big one will do what the smaller one will do and more....the smaller one can not.

Serac is an excellent day pack. With a large dry bag it is better. But to have room for meat and horns. A large pack bag is needed. I big bag and a Serac is a great two pack system. I can not stand using a huge pack for a day pack.

Muddycrick you could get all your hunting gear in a 4000ci bag but that doesn't leave much room for meat, skull and cape.

There's plenty of room for those with the meat shelf. I prefer to keep the meat, cape, and rack outside the pack bag.

Smallest I can use would be about 3500, but that would be for 3-5 day outings, and with the shelter and bag or quilt strapped to the outside.
