Hey some of my friends and I are going elk hunting early season in Colorado. Just wondered what's yall opinion on what to use for sleeping. Don't have an unlimited price range but want something light weight and that will keep me comfortable. Some guys like quilts others seem to like sleeping bags of some sort. I'd like to know your opinions. Thanks! Riley

Riley - - greetings from here in Colorado.... I hunt/Scout over 30 nights usually in either the Holy Cross or Eagles Nest Wilderness and always camp at least around 10,500 feet. Last year was my first full season here and I tried a cheaper/less thought out sleep system and was miserable my first 2 scouting tips. For me, being able to sleep efficiently is the key to a quality hunting experience. I pack this up each morning and move with it so I can cover more ground. Here is my setup that works perfectly....

1) Hilleberg Enan 3 Season tent - light but still warm (if it supposed to get really cold, I will take the Hilleberg Soulo)
2) Western Mountaineering Caribou MF 35 degree bag - you can run a much lighter/more packable bag with a higher quality tent. Being able to run a smaller sleeping bag because you have a warmer tent will save you a lot of space in your pack.
3) Thermarest NeoAir Xlite sleeping pad
4) Thermarest inflatable ultralight pillow, fits perfectly inside a mummy sack
5) if it might get cold I will throw in a Kuiu down vest to sleep in.
6) for hanging out around camp, I also carry a ENO Sub7 ultralight hammock and use my paracord/2 ultralight carabiners to string it up. For me, its a grand total of 10 ounces that is well worth getting off my feet after traveling usually 5 plus miles in my boots.
7) Melatonin as a natural sleep aid

Realizing this is kind of expensive, I can understand if you don't want to spend the money. But I would prioritize the tent over the other 4 items. A warm quality tent makes a huge difference in the amount of other gear you need to carry in order to stay warm.

My buddy on the other hand runs a Warbonnet hammock with a summer weight top quilt bottom quilt setup and a tarp over the entire sleep setup. It takes him much more time to setup than my setup.

I use a Clark jungle hammock, big Agnes pad and a 20 degree north face bag. Goes up in minutes and I don't need flat ground. I
second bogeyboys bring melatonin. First night at altitude can be tough.

You'll get a different opinion from everyone who posts haha

Im 6'2" and love to move around while sleeping. I switched from a mummy to an EE 20* quilt this year, love the quilt! Also ditched my BA pad and picked up a Sea to Summit Comfort Plus. Saved weight on my bag and essentially moved it to my pad, best decision I've made regarding backpacking/hunting and sleeping well.

Shelter wise I went from a cramped single man 3 season tent to a Seek Outside LBO floorless. So far Im loving this entire setup.
