What's the best pack for the$$$

Schmidty - Is it the Icon Pro that you're finding too short?

I have a long torso like you. I had picked up a 2012 Icon for cheap when the problems were occurring with the frame sheets. It fit fine. I figured that I'd just limit my load weight. Then we ended up with two bulls on the ground the same morning. One was a Clydesdale. The pack got overloaded. It squeaked, but got the job done without unrealistic discomfort.

I cut a couple of carbon arrows and slipped them into the frame pockets with a couple of dabs of silicone. More peace of mind about the frame strength and no squeaks. I packed out another three elk and a mule deer with that pack with no problem.

Though I would not recommend one of those older Kuiu packs as a first choice, it may be an inexpensive interim solution that you could probably find relatively quickly. And, as I said, worked and fit fine with my long torso.

I started kicking around Exo I'm running an Easton pickup 3000 and have an old north face to haul with so I think I'm stuck for this archery season. Why doesn't stone glacier do camo?

Just a heads up, if you have along torso the Exo is marginal. My torso is 21.5" and it barely works but would be alot better with an extra inch or two of frame length. I love that pack and frame but wish they had a taller option available. I only bring it up as it sounds like you are already having troubles in that area.

The exo frame is only 25" and the Kifaru 26" barely gives me enough lift, so the Exo is a no-go for us long torso folk. Having a long torso sucks. Can't tell you how many times I've ordered a tall size shirt that still isn't long enough. But it is nice to be in normal pant sizes.

This is no joke ! I sew extra material to lengthen all my merino shirts and run a 28" Kifaru frame.

Shimdty , I have a 28" Duplex frame with either a marge or medium belt I might sell if you're interested. It's a foliage frame.

I would be interested, I assume "marge" = "large" When I called Kifaru they said the 28" frames weren't coming out for a month. You must have a hookup.

This is the last generation frame not the new frame. The only "hookup" I have is fantastic customer service from Kifaru. I bought a 26" frame originally and when I contacted Aron on getting it fitted he determined I needed a 28" frame so he had one custom built for me. Marge is medium-large. It's not an official size but fits a 36.5 to 38.5 waist perfectly. I was bottoming out a large and the medium didn't wrap around enough. Again Aron had a custom size made for me. I'm sure it was a PIA to do but Kifaru makes the effort.

My torso in 21 1/2 44" chest 36/38 waist I think my chest filled up the kuiu was the pro. Any advice with those measurements for what size I should use

I would say 26 or 28" frame depending on how you like your pack to ride. I'm about the same torso length, but I like my pack a little low and almost all the weight on my waist because of an old shoulder injury. If you like the traditional 60-40 where 40% of the weight is on your shoulders, then you may get away with a 26. The 26 works okay for me up to about 80lbs, but the load lifters are maxed out. As far as a belt, I'd say marge. I'm a 36 waist (when I can find pants with big enough thighs) and I'm just pushing needing a marge and it doesn't tighten properly if I take a few weeks off working out.

Kifaru is a pretty small company, stone glacier is tiny. I think they have literally 2 guys. Every time I've called either Pete or Kurt answer the phone. Pete is great and is the founder of Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance, and Kurt is the owner of stone glacier, both extremely cool guys. But financially and logistically I don't think they could or would want to pull of all the different options like Kifaru does.

It's pretty amazing how light their gear is and how well it carries if it fits you.

I've got a 26" bikini and a SG Krux, the Krux is 25" but feels just as tall if not a bit taller than the bikini, it's weird. The Kifaru is proven and packed out 2 deer and a bear for me, unfortunately I've yet to break in the SG, although I was very happy scouting with it.

I just got back from an elk hunt and my sky talus was awesome. Got to under 150 yards twice with the pack, no camo was not issue. The first stalk was blown by a guy driving through the valley at the perfect time to not be driving through the valley. The second stalk I dropped the pack and Bino harness at 150 and went on to seal the deal. We were able to get close enough that I didn't get to load the pack with meat but have been lugging around about 90 pounds of salt since then and while it is not fun, it is a million times better than the tenzing I had before. Don't let the lack of "cool" camo push you from either pack.

SeekOutside Unaweep Fortress. . . I just ordered the 6300 with extra interchangeable frame extension to switch out from 24" to 28" on the fly. I plan on using the 24" for light loads and day use, 26" for loads up to 50lb and 28" for loads 50 to 100.

I am a big believer in the K-I-S-S acronym so after 40+ years (15 military) of wearing every freighter, external, internal and frame-less pack imaginable the Unaweep Fortress 6300 appealed to me the most for these reasons.

X-Pac waterproof material - Waterproof with seams sealed (I will still run a trash compactor liner)
Dry bag roll top closure
Fast adjustable frame height from 24" to 28"
Dual Ice Axe loops (I mountaineer and ski tour also)
Weight 3lbs - 8oz!!!! (3.5 lbs lighter than any of my other packs this size)

Talon Combo
Multi Lid dual purpose brain or chest rig
Made in U.S.A
Most Importantly - Seek Outside staff have not lost sight of customer relations through great customer service ( I have not experienced the same with Mystery Ranch or Kifaru)

Please don't recommend a pack that you haven't even used.

Please don't recommend a pack that you haven't even used.

In 2014 I used the SO Evolution 4800 with Talon on a 21 Day Denali summit Expedition to transfer caches between camps. Please don't assume I haven't by reading between the lines. I have every confidence in my opinion as it related to the subject area of torso and frame length based on my experience with the older but similar Evolution and my experience with other packs I have used over the last 44 years.

Respectfully,
Akicita
