Forgot my boots one time. hunted three days in Ariat ropers. Luckily I was just day hunting from the truck. Was 2 hours from home one time when I realized I forgot my binos, made for a long night of driving turning around and going back for them.

Not elk, but my wife forgot her license on a day hunt and wouldn't you know we saw over a dozen good bucks that day. I had already filled my buck tag and was hunting does. She got to watch. Was a good day anyway and she has never forgot sense then.

Last year my deer hunt was super close to home and I was just squeezing in a few late afternoon/evening hunts as I could spare the time. Wouldn't you know it, the evening I killed my buck I had left my headlamp at home because I was recharging the batteries and forgot to grab it thinking my pack was all set from the night before. Two miles out of some fairly steep country in the dark with a full mule deer in the pack would have been pretty dangerous had I not had a Petzl E+Lite in the bino harness as a backup. It wasn't as bright as my Zebralight but I was sure grateful to have it.

A couple of weeks ago I forgot my stove on a 4 night backpacking trip. I had my pot and fuel canister, just no stove. Luckily I was with a couple other guys and could share.

It wasn't an Elk hunt, but on a 3-day camping deer hunt down here in West Texas public land we got camp all setup and I opened my bow case and didn't have a bow in it. Immediately remembered hanging it up on the wall at home after practicing and not putting it back in the case. I caught a lot of fish that weekend.

On a whitetail hunt in home state once. Strapped all my gear on my climbing stand and walked in about a mile into a swampy River bottom before daylight. Put stand on tree, pack on back and turned around to tie my bow on the rope, just to remember I left it on the hood of my truck. Thankful it was still there when I angrily carried everything right back out!

Left my handgun in my buddies car after a hunt that i needed for work. He lived on the west side of CO I lived on E side... luckily he met me in the middle.
On hunts i hiked to the top of the mtn only to forget my release at camp.

On a weekend trip I got to my hunting spot and realized i forgot my sleeping bag.. and i agree with the other guy.. worst night sleep ever. Blame it for missing a huge mule deer that was outside my tent when i "woke up" i think i was still shivering too much plus with buck fever...

Another time i got hot and took off an outer layer only to realize i forgot to pick up my range finder.. good news is i remembered exactly where i left it so i went back only to find 2 legged critters putting up a tree stand in the same area that denied taking it :-/

Forgot my arrows once but was close enough to go back.

After a 2 hour drive i realized my bow was still leaning up against a tree... i was a kid.. my dad was pissed!!!

So ya i have pretty much forgotten everything at one time or the other.

Now i just check to make sure i have the necessities.

Not for elk, or even back country. But I did forget my portable seat for the turkey blind one year. Spent more than a couple of hours up and down from my rear to my knees. That one stayed with me for a day or so.

Forgot my safety harness strap for my hang-on stand. That was a long nervous sit.

The best one was half way up to deer for a week of hunting, going over my mental checklist, I realized I forgot both of my rifles ... turned around to pick them up as I assumed I might need them.

I was in Montana elk hunting and was trying To use my binos as a bipod shooting up hill, the bull dropped off the ridge line to the other side so I took off after him leaving my swaro’s on the side of the mountain. Luckily I found the the next day!

I’ve forgotten so many things over the years my wife’s convinced I do it deliberately and rotate whatever I forgot. Only things I’ve never left behind is my bow/rifle, ammo/arrows, tags and license, seems it’s only the non-essentials, like a knife. Ever field dressed a deer with a broad head?

Forgot boots hunting in deadfall. Had to tape my ankles.

Forgot a spoon for MH. Just made it soupy and drank it out of the bag.

Only time I've forgot a release was just going out for rabbits. Luckily learned from that lesson and pack a spare now.

Forgot binoculars, luckily someone had a spare set.

Started packing my bag early. Then going through my list a few times to verify I know where everything is and that I have it.

Blaze Orange, Tag, Release, Muzz Primers, Headlamp, Fuel, Sleeping Bag....All on separate occasions. Maintaining a checklist has since solved that....

Hunters Safety Card.
It was my first elk hunt and first hunt out west. Spent a lot of time on my list and went over it numerous times- checked it against several online lists. Checked and double checked everything before leaving. About halfway through our drive (Maryland to Colorado), one of the guys mentioned something about a hunters safety card and my heart sunk. I learned that in Co. you not only need it to get your license, but you must have it on you at all times (unless your number is verified). Fortunately, I only ended up losing a day and a half of hunting. Had family send a picture, and drove a couple hours to get it verified on Monday. Ended up getting an elk on the last day of the hunt so it worked out.

Fishing for steelhead on the coast got to the take out about dark, took the rods out of boat and leaned up against a tree while loading up. Drove about 20 miles to a camp spot and getting set up, Where's the rods? Was maybe 7 or 8 worth a couple thou $. Warp speed back to tree and they were still there.

Oops, wrong forum. Did forget Montana tags but only drove to my brothers house 15 minutes away and not 700 miles.

This was during a rifle season a few years back, but I forgot my damn boots once... Hustling to get out the door at 4am I just totally spaced throwing my boots in the car. My buddy got this photo evidence. I was constantly hopping around to avoid deep puddles as we'd hike along old mining roads, so my buddies called me "skate shoe kangaroo" (in addition to the more traditional "dumb ass") all weekend long. ssk.jpg

Another one i have come really close to forgetting is a small knife sharpener for the kill kit, I know a lot of people have gone to disposable blades now but I still like a good ole fashion knife
With you my mann, I keep a small aluminum frame carbide sharpener and my old buck knife that probably weighs more than some guys whole kill kit but oh well. Don't leave without it ever

Forgot the rain fly for a tent, but it was the middle of July and we never get rain. Well it poured into the tent on my wife and I. We had to pack up and hike out in the rain with no rain gear. It was her first camping trip and she actually wanted to again later that month.
