What the heck is this?

Found this while out this weekend. At first I just thought it was a tin can, it is tin, but the length of it and having the sealed cap on the end, and then having almost a stove pipe fitting on the end makes no sense.

Anyone have any idea?

Definitely looks like an old map or document case from images I can find of ones for sale on ebay
