Sangres have some BIG mulies--but takes some points to draw.

I have been in there elk hunting--do yourself a favor--blindfold yourself, tell your wife to sneak up on you as you lay on the sofa ready to doze off...tell her punch you in your junk and smash your shins with a bat...that will feel better than the pain the Sangres dishes out!

I recall seeing two bows on top that mountain... You were hunting, just not for deer. ;)

I also remember leaving my bow in camp opening morning because I was positive no self respecting elk would be where we were!

It was only my fear of "murphy's law" that led me to pack it after that, knowing a big bull would show up when I didn't have my bow.

The high country early rifle tag is what I want, one more year maybe two at tops and I'll be there.

Unit 63 holds some big Mulies especially above timberline. It's a draw unit but I think it will take 2-3 points if I remember correctly. You might get lucky and draw. Never hunted them just elk but we always ran into some big mulies while hunting. We would actually practice our stalks on them just to see how close we could get when we were not into the elk.

Perfect description... Yet for some reason I keep going back for more. Beautiful country for sure!

I actually saw several decent bucks while riding the rainbow trail along the east side of the Sangre d Cristo's. It was the last week of archery after the muzzleloader season. No tag, but I had plenty of time to get off my horse and kill them had I the inkling. Tough country is an understatement. Tougher than where I have been in the weminuche, flat tops or west elk.
