What length should I chop this barrel to?

What length to chop my 6.5 PRC?

Had a 23" suppressed on a bear hunt in oak brush a few years back. No interest in repeating that. I decided to hunt that one unsuppressed and all others are going 16.5-18" threaded. So much handier.

Well, the smith measured it up and it doesn’t look like I’ll get shorter than 21” or so if he goes .740 at the shoulder. Damn heavy ass Bergara contours. I left him with my suppressor, so he’s going to measure that up and get it as short as he can. If I recall correctly, they said on the podcast that the OG6.5 can actually fit shoulders slightly over .750, so I’m hoping he at least gets it to 20”. I wasn’t interested in doing a custom contour to cut an extra 2”. We shall see what he does in a couple weeks.

If I recall the discussion correctly, it will fit up to .780 ish if the bore is perfectly centered in the barrel. That's the part that creates issues and necessitates the safety margin.

That’s right! Well fingers crossed because we were at .760 at 18”. But I bet he’ll cut it between 20 and 21 and call it good.

Factory 6.5 PRC in a short barrel is going to be really slow. Why I sold mine when I went to a shorter barrel for a 6 UM.

Probably not an issue. But I really like being as close to 3k fps as possible.

I have a Bergara 6.5 PRC with a 24" barrel. It sits in a Rokstock with a SWFA 3-15 Gen 2, and a US 6.5OG. It is a pig, at 10lbs 4oz. My question to you all is:

Should I chop it to 18" or 20"? I do not handload, so I am shooting factory ammo. Right now, I am shooting Barnes loaded 145 TGK's or Berger EH 140's. Use case will be close range whitetails at home to elk and mulies out west. I drew an Idaho MD tag this year, and in addition to making a more wieldy package, would like to at least cover the oz gained by adding the suppressor.

For some reason, I am struggling with giving up a ton of velocity, even though I know I'll hold terminal velocity further than I am capable of shooting with either option. I know that is silly, but it's been a factor for me.
18” seems to be the sweet spot for me.
