it sure seems obvious that a human took the backstraps but that doesn't tell how the elk was killed

Were the ivories still there? It's hard to jump on poacher when I have had an elk run for 4 to 5 miles before dying. That elk had two bullets in the sweet spot. That's where the term "shoot until it's dead" comes to play. I would say if a poacher shot it, they would have taken the ivories as well.

I don't know what killed it, but a human removed the back straps.
