What is this on an old Remington 700?

Is it a DIY bipod from the 1960s? It is on a 222 Remington ADL and I think it might be a first generation ADL stock. I have never seen anything like it.

That’s a cool gun. I had the same stock on a 243 - I’ll always remember that aluminum butt plate.

I’ve never seen a bipod like that, but it looks well thought out for a DIY.

I also don't know, following to get an answer. If its not a bipod, it almost looks like it could be a way to apply tension to the barrel? I kind of doubt it though

I wonder if it’s someone’s old walk around woodchuck gun for hunting the fields back east. Stab the legs in the ground and shoot. They look long enough for shooting sitting.

I'd say it's a bipod. From the finish, I'd guess it was offered commercially back then. Never saw one like it though. Cool find.
