What is the consensus on the Benelli R1 nowadays? Does it have a fan club? Anybody have the secret sauce on its accuracy inconsistencies?

Based on the discussions I've read, the Benelli R1 seemed to make a splash about 10-20 years ago and then interest largely evaporated. It seems to be a more popular gun for driven hunts in Europe, where I gather it's called the Argo, and where long-range accuracy is less important than rate of fire and shootability.

I have never seen such varied reports of accuracy on a gun. A lot of reports of "1moa accuracy, shoots fine, no problem". But then there's about just as many reports of "inaccurate, built too much like a shotgun to ever be accurate, design is incompatible with accuracy, can never be accurate". It really leaves me wondering if there is some method for wringing accuracy out of them, like being careful with assembly torque or shooting technique/ forearm use, that never made it into the hive mind. (Perhaps it's rather revealing that Benelli seems to have gone out of their way to make the gun incompatible with a bipod...)

Are there any R1 gurus out there? It's a unique enough gun that I'd think there'd be a cult around it. My understanding is it's caliber swappable between 338 win mag or 9.62x39 on the top end, and 308 or smaller on the bottom end, even if not exactly marketed as such. Which is neat at least, and like an AR, the optics stay on the barrel. It does also seem to have some more manufacturer support than a lot of Euro-influenced rifles do that make it to North America, so somebody must be using them, even if it's the Canucks.

Im not a guru, but I do have 2. I have one of the older "wood" 30-06's and a comfortech 338. The 338 is one of the most accurate guns i own in factory application. The caveat is thats its only accurate with 210 Ttsx. It's REALLY 1/2" accurate. So much so that i recently shot and 1.25" group that i knew i pulled the 2nd shot. The 3rd was touching the first. ..This was right after a .519 group. Then i reshot another group(out of anger). Down to .465. Its actually too expensive now to shoot like that though. But every other ammo i tried. NOT ALOT IS over an inch. I still have yet to try the 230 eld ammo. ALL other Hornady ammo was around slightly over an inch. In the 338 nothing is 2". Everything is still under 1.5.. The 30-06 is the same as in under 2". Ive only found 125 gr blue box federal. Which was a long time ago. I dont even think they make it anymore was always under an inch. in the .6s, 7's . Then the 180 Trophy copper is the only other one under 1". But this one is closer to .8" . And i have shot through everything it been pointed at with that bullet. Longest shot was a cross canyon 320 yrds at a pig. And it blew threw that pig. I dont think id attempt further with my guns. They are not set up for long range. Everything is factory, untouched. Except the new pistion system on the 06. I bought a FEW BOXES of 165 ttsx and a couple 168s and they shot over an inch. Never under. Very disappointing. $$$$$$ The secret to accuracy is the run ammo through it. Mine both like ammo that shoots under an inch. Plenty that are over AND to get the numbers lower shoot 1 in the mag only. When the action opens it cools the barrel immediately. This helps. The numbers are lower shooting 1 at a time. My experience is that they are DEFINITELY accurate, BUT PICKY.

Reliability. Very reliale "NOW". when i first had the 06 is started to jam alot. It was hard to keep clean. The new system is a world better. Never jams. The 338 never jammed ever. I HAD a BAR 7mm rem that jammed ALL THE TIME. It was a full ATACS model. I got rid of it. But im sure it was an anomaly. I will buy another soon.

RECOIL. This is the best thing about this gun. If you've ever shot a rem 760 pump 30-06. You've felt recoil. I do have a 375 ruger, but thats a different level of recoil. THIS recoil was 1/2 that pump 06 recoil. Probaly less than half. The 338 is very similar. You can shoot these alllllll day long. I often plink with the 06(price) And they are smooth. The BAR is stiffer and faster. The speed of the BAR stands out compared to the R1. But the R1 feels smoother and softer.

Trigger. Alot to be desired. Its a 2 stage, with creep. No crisp/clean break AT ALL. But from what ive read there's nothing you can do that can really change things. Again i'm no guru and these are 300 yd and under guns FOR ME. I've never even shot them at a range further than 300 yards.

Thanks for sharing!

When you shoot them, how do you support them?

How often do you disassemble them, and do you do anything special during reassemble to make sure they go back consistently?

I usually shoot from the caldwell sandbads or a backpack at the range. I have lead sled but since i dont hunt with it. I rearly use it. I dont have a bipod on either of these 2 guns. Like i said they are my short range guns and the 06 is really my favorite gun to take to the range. I have a 10 round mag for it also.

Disassembly is easy. I would use (i believe its a 12mm) little wrench to take off the gas assembly top. The forearm tip works good, but the holes in the piston assembly top start to wear after years of use. I usually clean after a couple trips to the range. So after around 60 -80 rounds. I wont say i go 200 rounds without cleaning. I've never went that long.

POI definitely moves 1/2 or so after cleaning. I wouldn't trust it on a hunt. I fly with it diassembled and put it in one if the 36" cases. When i fly i reverify and make an adjustment. If i was going on a hunt i would not disassemble to clean after the range trip. The accuracy is consistent after disassembly. The POI is not. I cannot say with 100% certainty that it wont shift a little. To answer the question. I do nothing special.

Here is the velocity taken from my 338 hunt load. Only a 6 shot sample.

210 ttsx rated at 2865

1st shot 2863
2nd shot 2869
3rd. Shot 2815

4th. Shot 2829
5th shot 2823
6th Stot. 2794

Obviously after it heats up it looses velocity. So i don't know how good that crio treatment is.
