kinda had a "Wake up call". just did my annual physical exam. my doc, carefully explored my faceskin and said, "whoa..oh o!"..

she opens up a cabinet and pulls out a stack of literature about sun protection. then she pulled out liquid nitrogen and proceeds to freeze off rough spots. she gave (the spotty patches) them a million dollar name, but in summary..i did pre cancer skin damage to my skin. i walk out of the exam room and my wife gives me that look..you know the one, where she starts handing you zinc based sun-screen..and drives you to the store for the most ridicoulous floppy sun protection hat?

i've committed to do something to protect my skin.

the frozen dead skin, coming off my ears..kinda hurts and itches.

i think i am going to wear one of those hats with the fabric on the back that lawn workers and salt water flats fishermen wear. i get to my hunting spot, out comes the camo caps.

I grew up in FL and have had my share of bad sunburns and my blonde hair doesnt help me any. I used to fish frequently both offshore and inshore and have been to the FL Keys lobstering every summer since I was in diapers.
A wide rimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, longsleeve shirt, bandannas, etc are mandatory!
Check out Hoo-Rag. A buddy of mine started the company and there are several others that offer a similar product. It is a thin stretchy light fabric that blocks the sun that can be worn multiple ways to prevent sunburn.
I bought one and like it a lot.

I use a BUFF, I keep one with me on all fishing and hunting trips. Lightweight, and can be used for many things including sun protection.

I've used the following for sun protection mainly while fishing; most of these you can find in earth tones for hunting:

I am a fan of the patagonia shirt. I have a similar earlier version that offers great sun protection for your arms, torso, neck, and head. You can wear any standard baseball hat or visor under the hood.

I have a Kuiu Boone and its ok, it does not vent very well. I had to wash it a lot to soften it up and I cut a 2" slash on both side to help with venting. I will use a Shemagh in the winter time as well.

One problem with a lot of "boonie" or bush hats is a high dork factor. The military style hats are also somewhat heavy (i.e. hot in the sun). I personally like the REI outrigger bucket hat and Patagonia bucket hat, both in tan or light olive drab colors, for being very light & breathable, and also relatively low on dork factor.

Unless you plan to wear a wide brimmed hat everyday, I don't see a reason to wear one while you're hunting. We are talking about a very small percentage of most guy's time.
