What does it mean if someone follows you?

Got a notification saying someone is following me.

What does that mean? Are they stalking me? Do they get a notification for every post I make or something?

Is it freaky or am I too old school?

They get notified when you start a thread but not for comments. It’s mainly a way to keep a list of people that interest you.
