What do you use for a pack saw?

With a para stove on hand and a supertarp on order I recently looked at adding a saw to my pack. After a bunch of research I ended up getting the Granfors Bruks hunters axe. Yes it more expensive and heavier at two lbs but damn it's a sweet tool. I've used it a few times already and really look forward to having it in my pack especially come the late season.

Here is a new saw I was not familiar with in my Bugle mag....the Kutzall XL comes in at 12 oz....maybe someone has some experience with it.

think im going to roll with one of these this year. going to take it to the grinder to round the end out. and maybe wrap some duct tape around the back end for grip. got one in the garage, ill weigh it but it cant be more than an ounce or two. there plenty stiff too

Last year I used one of these http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200461870_200461870 and a 12 inch bi-metal blade.

Stored the handle and the blade separately in the pack until time for use.

Worked well except for the handle getting a bit slippery, much better stroke than the little Gerber that I was using.

Easily cut the horn removal to a third of the time .

handles to big and bulky on that for me. ill either just run duct tape or i was thinking about making a variation of this with just the sawzall blade

I just picked up a 6ft misery whip the other day for clearing wilderness trails w/ the horses & bucking up camp wood, and found myself watching some of his vids on saw restoration. Hoping he does a segment on sharping those old saws. I got the tool to set the teeth, just need a good tutorial on proper file work.

I just made a lightweight hack-saw handle. I made sure to put the blade cutting in the pull stroke, since there is zero support for it to cut on the push stroke and would simply bend on me. Put a piece of Gorilla Tape on the blade and throw it in the pack.

I own a qiwiz saw. Save your money. That's a hint.

Amazing to see such personal difference in saws. Should be one clear winner, but doesn't look that way. I ran a Sven saw for a brief winter survival exercise this February. I think it's a life saver and will own one ASAP. No clue how it would work on a skull cal tho.

Works great! Available wood and bone blades stow in frame and you can buy a sheath if you want to pack the extra weight.

^^^ This is what I have. It's pretty hard to beat for 9.5 ounces with bone and wood blades. It's pretty important when you run into this.

I have a small Wyoming saw. I speed holed the handle and the two pieces that build the blade support. Lose the case and electrical taped the blades. Awfully nice for cutting the antlers off the skull, cutting through an alder snag or getting some firewood.

I can tell you NOT to use any gerber retractable or folding saw. I have broken 3 in various areas including blades, handles, and retraction mechanism after light use only . TOTAL P.O.S. saws in my experience.

X2. Knew someone that worked for Fiskars and a few of us got the Gerber bone saws. They all broke.

Do yourself a favor and look into Silky Saws. All the professional arborists swear by them.

All of the Japanese arborist saw brands I've used are awesome. However, cutting bone can trash the teeth on at least some of those saws, so keep that in mind.
