Have a 308 that's worn out that I want to rebarrel. I'd like to keep it lower recoil so my daughter can use it when she's old enough. Thinking 243 AI unless there's something else I should look at. I looked at 6mm Rem and 6 Creedmoor but it looks like you almost need a long action for those. Any thoughts?

Lots of options and even more if you put a longer than factory stock magazine box in it. Just to name a few, 243Win, 6 and 6.5 Creedmoor, 7-08, 6.5x55 Swede, 260 Rem, and a whole slew of wildcats.

My 6mm Creedmoor is built on a SA Rem 700 and it shoots exceptionally well.

I wouldn't do a swede on a short action, it's a mid length case...

For a young shooter on smaller big game I'd do 243, 25 super, or a fast twist 22-250

I’d go 6.5 creedmoor. My wife went from a .243 to the creedmoor for this season. I don’t think the recoil is much more at all and her new 6.5 is a pound lighter than her .243. You can start her with the lightest loads available and work up to heavier if needed and really never need a new rifle

Are you a reloader? I just re barreled to 6mm BR Norma and am liking it. I am shooting 105 gr Amax very accurate. Will also shoot light bullets well. A very versatile and efficient round with very little recoil.

If you handload, 7mm-08 Ackley. If not, 7mm-08. With modern bullets, you have totally mild recoil and she can smack everything up to elk. 23” fluted barrel. And plenty flat w 140 Berger’s or 120 ttsx for antelope. Look up BuzzH on LRH forum. Very efficient caliber.

All Creeds were designed for short actions so no issues there. Shouldn’t have an issue with 243 AI either.
