I’m a trad newbie and am taking lessons from Tom clum and shooting instinctive.

out to 20 yards is looking good and I don’t have the time to extend my “instinctive range” as the season is close. Main reason to extend it is in case I injure an animal.

last night while shooting 3d elk targets I noticed if I looked, not aimed, at a point higher than the 12 I could shoot at longer distance.

besides stupid, does this approach have a name?

I feel like that is still instinctive. I would bet as you continue to shoot that way you will start learning your trajectory at longer range and will not need to aim at a high point to hit what you want. Hard to say how long but I would think within a couple weeks you could close that gap to nothing.

Point and Shoot?

I have easy access to a 20yd range and 40min drive access to longer range range.

At least it’s a way to go for thisnyear

I'd lump it in with instinctive gap. I'd at least try to figure out what your point on distance is before season starts, you have almost a month, but use the end of the arrow, not the tip, as your broadhead and field tip are apt to be much a different length. Are you shooting at Golden?

Point of aim shooting is where you are actually aiming at a spot higher in elevation than your intended target and the arrow drops in. We do this a fair bit messing around, one of the best things about shooting at longer range is it will intensify all of your errors, if you aren't pulling through the shot or anchoring the same, if you are putting torque in your grip a 2 inch "miss" at 20 is an 8 inch miss at 40. Once you can shoot well at 40 20 is a chip shot

They call it 'pick a point' around here....when you know you're arrow drop at different distances....and you aim at that spot.

Thats how I shoot on very long targets 50yds and out as its above my PO distance and the arrow blocks the spot.
