The POD bags are a "top style" bag, halfway between a regular mummy bag and a quilt: the bottom of the bag is just a thin sheet without insulation, and is designed to attach to your insulated sleeping pad. This way you don't carry extra weight of down that you just compress when you lay on top of it. The pad attachment also keeps the bag in place on your pad if you move during your sleep.
