who hunts western black tail? how is your favorite way to hunt them? clear cuts? my favorite is still hunting through big timber.

Still hunting in timber worked out great for me during my years in Oregon. Lots of folks don't have the patience to sit in one spot for too long and focus just on the hunt.

Depends on the conditions, but my favorite is glassing over previously identified sign on blue bird mornings, that’s my favorite blacktail hunting(anytime after Oct 20, prior to that I’m more keeping tabs on sign and making a strategy to hunt that sign in a low impact way)

This coming week will be nasty, but the timeframe is right, so I will be spending my time still hunting, and hoping for little breaks in the weather to glass.

What I don’t like about still hunting in bad weather is the urgency to make a decision to shoot or not, I value my tag and want to know exactly what I’m putting my tag on… I’m really paranoid about that now, a couple years ago I made a bad decision on a stunted rack 5.5yr old buck in bad visibility with 8 days left in the season, I knew it was a big bodied white face older buck, but couldn’t tell exactly what he had going on with the poor visibility in the fog and rain with his head in a small fir tree with slash behind him, it was the first time that I’ve been truly bummed out filling a tag, deer activity was really ramping up, weather was good for the next week and I took myself out of the game. I would have been very happy with that buck on the last couple days, he was a porker, but not with over a week

I passed a really good buck last year in bad visibility, and knew it was a good buck, but could only make out the frame and it was fairly early, I was not willing to be surprised in any way 😂

I will still be grinding every day regardless of weather, and will be glassing when I can, and either ambush or still hunting when I can’t, I enjoy it all, I just like to know exactly what I’m looking at, not having a buck looking at me 60yds trying to make a quick decision to shoot or not
