Have any of you recorded actual weight measurements of an average bull moose backstrap? I have a "situation" that isn't worth detailing here, but some firsthand actual weight measurements of a pair of 50" AK Yukon bull moose backstraps would be appreciated. Thanks for any info you can offer.

Never weighed one but cut up a bunch and if you want to PM me I’d be happy to chat.

I feel bad just thinking about where this is going. I’ve never weighed one either.
Same, and I hate to say it but I’ve been in a situation where it was fairly obvious (to me) that the amount of meat I had was not what I should have had.

Luckily though I recognized the issue and hunt with a dude who wouldn’t dream of ripping some body of of meat (although he gets sketchy when it comes to moose racks).

You can see the backstraps in this photo as I'm tidying up the meat. I recall them being more than 4 ft long and at least 25 lbs each, but I can't say for sure.

I'm trying to find some way to place a value per pound on the straps, but I can't find a good reference. I'm thinking it should at least be equal to choice cuts of beef. But I'm biased. I went to the end of the earth the bring it back home.

We just got back from Newfoundland and my buddies got the ones they harvested cut up from a local butcher. I elected to do my own. All I can say is I got a lot more backstrap cuts than they did. They got 8 packs of 2 in each. I got 17 packs with 2 in each cut 1 1/2” thick. I prefer more steaks than burger and I can’t even accurately guess how many 1 1/2” thick steaks I got but 4 times more than they got. They also averaged 85 pounds of burger. I ended up cubing all my extra junk meat in order to can it and I’d guess 30 pounds or so.

I try to pack our boned moose meat for Supercub transport with a goal of 40 pounds per pack and definitely not more that 50 pounds. From a 60" bull, I can put both backstraps in one bag and consider it full. So 20-25 seems right to me also.

Never even put my hands on a moose, but I was going to say 25# before any neatening up.

Having cleaned 60 or so whitetail and dropped off 20 or more for processing at various places, I can say with confidence that processing my own yields at LEAST 20% more. Maybe even as much as a third sometimes.
