I plan on useing memorial day weekend to take a scouting trip to south central colorado but being from texas i have no idea what the weather will be like. Thought maybe someone on here could tell me what to expect. Will probably be camping at 8,000-10,000 feet. Thank you

It’s really a crap shoot depending on local conditions but I live at 8,000 in south central Colorado and I’d say you’ll probably be fine. There will likely be drifts on northerly aspects in the upper reaches of that elevation range but most ground should be generally free of snow.

Weather in may... well anywhere from 90f to snowing, seriously. Most likely you'll get 70s (bit cooler higher up) and sun but check the report as the trip approaches. The snow at 10k on the northernly stuff can actually be fairly thick still but its packed down typically (might be slushy in full sun). Creek shoots than collect lots of snow might have snow/ice bridges on them still.

The point is it’s impossible to tell what the conditions will be like. If the winter continues as it’s been I’ll promise there won’t be any snow.

Somehow it seems like its always wet and miserable Memorial Day weekend - at least if I have anything planned. You'd want to be prepared for below freezing at night of course. Depending on where exactly you are trying to get into to scout, snowpack could be a bigger issue. Trails through timber areas can still be pretty piled full of snow depending on the specific area. It might be good idea would be to check some snow pack reports towards the end of March. Right now the snowpack is quite poor this year, but CO on a historical average receives 1/3 of its snowpack in March. Sometimes snow filled trails aren't too bad if its hard enough to walk over. If you're post holing through a top crust, it can get old pretty quick! :)

The last 2 winters have not gotten serious until Feb and have still been active in May, in the CO mountains. Got plans for July 4?
