want to have some elephant steaks ?

Oh man, here we go.

FWIW, A buddy that guided in Africa for many years told me that a small herd of elephants can wipe out the entire food supply for a whole village in one night.

The permit fee for an Elephant or Lion supports many villages with critical resources.

There is some context here that many of us might not understand.... much like the New York City people dictating to Montanans on wolves.

I don’t profess to understand the intricacies of these decisions but I do know it’s a lot more complex than the anti-hunting people would have you believe.

A population of 100k and going to sell 500 permits? I'd say they short changing themselves.

Maybe not. Elephant gestation is almost 2 years, and they don't reach reproductive age until they're between 10 and 14 years old. It takes a lot of elephants to maintain a stable population when you remove 500 a year.

Ever since mugabe that country has been in ruins. Most of africa from my understanding on the hunts is that the tribes keep the meat you just get the cape and such. Couldn't imagine transporting a elephant lol

This is business as usual. They are just selling the tags that they have been allowed per CITES.

no, the meat is not exportable and no, it is not wasted.

For my money, the most beneficial thing about the safari industry is keeping habitat wild. When you realize that in Kenya, for example, it used to be islands of people in an ocean of wild land and animals and is now islands of animals in an ocean of people, you realize there is a trend that does not look good.

keeping areas free of overuse and infrastructure allows animals and landscapes to stay wild. Very few people will pay 1500$ Per day like they do at a luxury camp to go to the Save Valley in suicide month and tromp through the bush fending off tse tse flies, and being scratched all day by nasty bush. It also benefits the animals by not habitusting them to human presence like in the Mara or other popular places. I have a friend who manages a camp in Botswana and having lived there since the 60s has admitted the animals no longer have the spirit their wild predecessors did. Very sad.

Packing out an elephant quarter would definitely put a pack to the ultimate test. Better start training, extra heavy lol
The trunk weight 500 lbs...

also has about 40,000 muscles in it. That’s a lot of steaks...

want to have some elephant steaks ?

I'm sure I would have at least one after dropping an elephant over there. I'll try just about anything once. The only thing I'd want to bring back would be the tusks, but I doubt that's even possible anymore. For what it would cost to shoot an elephant, I could get a heck of a lot of really good elk tags for that same amount. So I doubt I'd ever choose elephant over that if I was going to spend that kind of money.

It is hard to bring them back to the US. Exports were locked up several years ago and it’s a slow slog to try to get a permit. I have a friend whose hunted a great bull in Zimbabwe and it waiting on pins and needles to get them back.

I’d only hunt one elephant: well on his 6th molar, no hair on his tail, at least 55 years old. And I’d probably weep as the old man fell to earth, knowing I’m not far behind him.
