I just ordered a new canvas elk wall tent. Been wanting to upgrade for years and finally pulled the trigger.

The hardest decision for me was where to have the stove pipe hole placed as the manufacture typically installs it in the wall. I circumvented the decision by paying extra and having one put in both the wall and the roof. Figured it wouldn't hurt having the option.

Though, if you had to choose, would you rather have your stove pipe going through the side wall or through the roof? In my previous tent I had it through the wall and absolutely hated it. But that's just opinion. What's yours?

Neither...... End wall or bust.

When I had my tent made, i asked for it in the wall. Left the Roof whole and unaltered and limited the ember or spark damage. a lot of good reasons why it made sense ... Then i used it for 2 or 3 years and found that it just didnt work as well. Had it altered to add the stove pipe hole to the Roof. Now I have both and havent even thought about using it out the wall

I prefer a roof stove jack. I have never left my tent up long enough to have a fire concern from falling needles but if that is what you are planning on I would be careful with a stove jack in the roof. For me the set up is simpler and you have more stove options. I know you didn't ask but I also switched to a tent that had a stove jack in the front of the tent and that has been a game changer, that way you aren't tracking firewood all the way to the back of the tent.

I usually put the stove in the front of the tent. Then I go up about 2 ft and go out the front of the tent. Then I go up about 5-6 ft to get the stove to draw.

Below that first horizontal stretch I hang a pole by wire about a foot lower. It makes a good place to dry socks.

Roof.

My Davis came with the stove pipe in the front/roof.
If I had the choice I’d put it right in the middle. That way I could fit another cot where the stove is
