I'm looking at replacing the head on my vortex ssp tripod. Will most fluid and ball heads attach to this model?

Yes, from what I understand you will just need to buy a 1/4” to 3/8” male stud adapter because most fluid heads are a female 3/8” and the Summit tripod is a female 1/4”.

Which head are you looking for?

I was looking at the Manfrotto befree or Sirui VA-5.

Forget the Manfrotto. The VA5 is so much better, arca swiss and with the 20% off we offer through the end of April and the rebate right now, it's a steal. Plus a 6 year warranty vs a 1 year

I was wondering that. That head seem like it would have been overkill on that Vortex tripod?
Yes it could be, also you would have to have that 3/8 to 1/4 inch adapter and seems like it could be a weak point. This is the model I purchased from camerland. They will give you a deal if you call and mention Rokslide.

I just did this exact thing. I have the vortex tripod and mounted the Sirius VA-5 to it. You do need the adapter. This is the first season I’ve run it but so far so good. The adapter sometimes loosens a little when it’s strapped to my pack but it hasn’t been a big issue. At some point I am planning on upgrading my tripod as well because that head is much much better than my tripod and it’s noticeable but I did the head first.

I also think the adapter loosening issue could be solved with some loctite but I wasn’t willing to do that because I am going to get a new tripod

Just a heads up for anyone searching this question like I did on on most search engines. You have to remove the pan-head by unscrewing the threaded cap in the post, then remove the pan-head. After that is off you have to heat the collar up with a mapp torch to remove the collar and expose the 1/4" threads.

You can also flip over the center post and use the threads that were used for the hook. You won’t have the hook but it’s much lower profile than the adapters some use. The center post is two pieces that unscrew from each other. I don’t particularly care for the tripod for hunting but it’s decent for travel photography and as a spare
