I receive press releases from various sponsors. Since I'm always looking for the perfect scope cap, I thought you all might be interested in these too. Haven't tried them myself yet. Anyone?

The Last Flip Cap You’ll Ever Need

Vortex takes riflescope lens protection to another level with their new Defender Flip caps. High-quality components and purpose-specific materials deliver stand-out durability—a welcome attribute for shooters who have been searching for a better option.

Super-stout stainless steel spring and pin guarantees operational reliability. Eyepiece covers boast three stop positions. Vertical stop is ideal for use with one of Vortex’s all-new Dope Disks[SUP]™[/SUP]. The optional Dope Disk is fully customizable with user-specific ballistic data and fits directly into the eyepiece cap. I might have finally found something from vortex that I might buy. Looks like a neat concept for storing bullet drop numbers.

I was going to buy them but found out they won't fit my vortex scope. I guess they won't work on the Vipers with a 1" tube... bummer because I really like the idea of storing the ballistic info. inside the flip cap.

Ya, those should work great for the under 40 crowd.;)
I get it I get it!

Bummer that they don't fit the Viper with 1" tube cause that's exactly what I was thinking of trying them on. I'll see if I can find out if that fit is coming

Hey Guy,

Riley from Vortex Optics here and you can actually take the E-10 and use it on the objective end of the Viper scopes with the 1in tube. The E-10 will fit on objective lens and eye pieces with an OD of 40mm to 46mm.
I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

O-50 will fit 55mm to 59mm
O-44 will fit 48mm to 53mm

I like the "Dope Disk" idea, but it's also easy enough to make on your own, for use with other scope caps.

I like the Alumina scope caps from Leupold. They're all metal in construction, have O-rings for sealing, and screw in to the objective and ocular ends of the scope for a perfect fit and finish. I wish caps of this material (aluminum) and design were available for other scope brands.

These slip-on rubber caps from Vortex look very similar to those from Butler Creek. I wonder how these are different/better?

I made scope cap inserts this past fall using some paper from Rite in the Rain (which is heavy/durable and waterproof). Print using a copier or laser printer (not an ink jet printer) so the ink is also waterproof, or write on your info using a waterproof sharpie marker. Once designed, just cut to shape and attach to the inside of your scope cap with a small piece of double-sided scotch tape.

You can use Microsoft Excel, so all your numbers line up in your desired grid layout, and adjust font size/style/bold to match the size of your scope cap for a perfect fit and maximum size allowable for quick readability.

Another option, instead of a dope table, is to draw your reticle (used a ruler and sharpie) and label your subtensions with custom reference data. Or, instead of a ruler and sharpie, you could even recreate your reticle in Microsoft Excel, type your label numbers, and print.

Just as an example, I have the Leupold VX-6 3-18 scope with the B&C reticle, so I labeled the subtensions with their MOA equivalents (2.19, 4.80, 6.26, and 7.82). This allows the B&C reticle to now operate like other reticles with MOA-based subtensions. Then, I also labeled those subtensions with their precise equivalent yardages for my personal load and hunting conditions (considering elevation/pressure, temperature, etc.). Using the reticle this way, it is more accurate than using the generic rough yardage estimates for the reticle provided by Leupold. For that B&C reticle, I also labeled the 2 wind-compensating marks on those first two subtensions with their MOA equivalents (2.16 and 3.03).

The MSRP on the Vortex Dope Disks is $9.99. Seems pretty expensive for a tiny circle of paper. That could get expensive for different load and environmental conditions. Or, with your own creativity, you can print and cut your own... your own limitless supply for practically nothing (a lot of circles can fit on a single sheet of paper).

Since we're just talking about a circle of paper, Vortex should consider just including their Dope Disks for free with the purchase of their scope caps. That would make their scope caps much more attractive and competitive with other scope cap companies.

Vortex should also consider a "print your own" option for the Dope Disk on their website. Just type your data into their template online, pay a simple fee for the use of their template (like $1.00), and then print your own disk (PDF page with disk to cut out). This would cost Vortex nothing, while generating a little profit. In that case (for a dollar), I might consider using their template. But, there's no way I'm paying $9.99 for something I can easily type and print myself.

I have had these in my hand at Vortex. they are much tougher then the Butler creek. Very close the the aadmount. I gave them a strong twisting and turning and they are very well constructed. The disk is a very neat idea and yes you can do it yourself also. But some will like to just order them. As much as I like the aadmount's and feel they may be the best, these are very close and MUCH cheaper. I will be using these soon
