I know this has been discussed a while ago, wanting to see if anyone has had any issues with there new made in China razors now that they have been out a while. I have a set of 8x42s made in Japan coming and some of the paint or material has rubbed off, vortex says I can send them in and they would replace but they will be the ones currently coming out of China. The rep told me everything is exactly the same and that the Japanese company actual set up a facility in China ( strange ).. wondering if I should keep the Japan made or send in and get the new China made. The blemish is all cosmetic ..

Thanks for any input !

If they are performing optically well, I wouldn’t replace them. I had a 3rd version MIJ. Had paint chip issues and badge on diopter fell off (it’s just an adhesive).

If you want longer life, better aesthetics, send them in. Sell the new pair and upgrade. Swaro / Leica are top notch, Leica makes a beautiful instrument.

If it’s cosmetic who cares unless your going to sell them? Looks are not a big thing for optics. I wouldn’t do it just because of a cosmetic issue. Now when you plan to sell and upgrade to Swaro or Leica yes send it in and get a brand new one to sell.

Don't do it.

I've yet to look through a pair of Chinese made binoculars that didn't have SOME kind of weird QC issue. Barrels not perfectly aligned...soft spots...etc. And that includes two pairs of Chinese made Razors now. I think I'm done experimenting with Chinese optics.

The GEN 2 are nothing like Swarovski. I don’t think they make them. The latest version has been out for maybe 4-5 years.

Don’t buy glass based on aesthetics alone.

Vortex replaced that version for a reason. The current version was an upgrade.

Can you still get the gen ll. That look like Swarovski.
You can still find the open bridge versions on Ebay, occasionally NIB, but as pointed out the newer version is stated to have improved optics over the gen II per Vortex: YouTube

be ready for your Razors to fall apart. Its gonna happen, i read it on Rokslide.

Kind of funny you posted this here since this thread is about a warranty replacement. So yeah you read it in this thread.

I have a pair of Razor 12X50 I bought beginning of 2013. I used them hard for 4 years. Finallly they started fogging internally. No biggie I have had Swaros do the same thing. Send them in (Japan model), they replace them for free, great awesome warranty vortex....except they are Chinese model. Oh well they are still Razors so I'll still rock them. Focus them at the house right before a winter caribou hunt. First time I pull them out of my bino pouch after riding 30 miles on the snowmachine the right I can't/won't focus. Dork with the diopter a bunch and hte focus...nothing. Well crap I go ta monocular with brand new $1K+ binos the first trip out.

Get home send them back to Vortex and they fix them. While they were gone I ordered 12X50 Swaro. Got the Chinese razor back from Vortex repaired and promptly sold them. Had they kept it in Japan where my last ones that lasted 4 years of hard use I would have likely kept them but I fear the QC is likely lacking now they they swapped their country of origin.

Just to clarify, the razors I returned where for cosmetic purposes only... they functioned perfectly! This is not to say that others did not have issues, just not the case here.

Also wanted to mention that I own a few different vortex products -

4.5-27x56 razor gen 2 mil scope
11-33x50 razor spotter
Viper PST 4-16x50
8x42 vipers

This is the first time I’ve ever used there warranty program, and I am happy with all of the above.

Oh I know and hopefully it’s the last time you need to use it. I just thought it funny he posted that on a warranty replacement thread, even if minor.

I’m a little late here. But I have Japanese 10x42 Razors and last fall I tested them against a new pair of made in china Razors.
The chinese were noticeably dimmer and would not resolve as fine.
I might’ve gotten lucky with mine because I also tested them against some SLC 10x42, and while the swaros where a tiny bit brighter and had less glare, my japanese razors had more contrast.
I was fully prepared to ditch my Razors for the swaros but it was basically a tie. And contrast is king when looking for game imho.
