Anyone else find they are having trouble with Vertigo while out hunting?

Just came back from a week in Idaho in and around the Frank searching for elk, I'm a flat lander from the midwest and this was the steepest country I've ever seen in my life. Like some others in the Elk pages have said, its big, its beautiful, and its EMPTY! We didn't see any bulls or spikes either. Only one "herd" of cows in about a week there, some mule deer does by the roads, and luckily a group of Big horn rams, as well as a couple groups of big horn ews. Not really any predator sign either, only some bear scat one day but no howling or anything, same for anyone we talked too which was a shock from our research and reading on here.

So anyway I'd found while out hiking if I tried to look up the side the mountain I was on or down I'd immediately get dizzy feel unbalanced and have to look away for fear of falling. Sometimes it was pretty strong like I would want to sit down right away so not to fall off the side of the mountain lol. I was fine glassing other hillsides faraway stuff etc. So wanted to see if anyone else has this happen to them? And any tips tricks to help with it? I'm not "afraid" of heights just generally not a fan lol. And I do get some vertigo when roofing (probably a couple times a year, not really a job but more frequent then normal person), seems likes its been getting worse with age.

It most likely has to do with your inner ear. I get the same feeling when it gets bad and in need of resetting. Looking up or down in a certain position can trigger it, or getting up quick from sitting or lying down. Look up "Epley Maneuver".
The maneuver works, my PT showed it to me the first time, now I just do it at home on my own.

I had some problems with it. I found several different exercises on YouTube and they help tremendously.

When I feel it coming on I take a dramamine and put some vertigo drops on back side of ears. Picked the drops up at Walmart. Probably just a placebo but it seems to shorten the length of time that the vertigo sticks around.

I had it severely for like 3-4 days once I felt like I was being spun on the wheel of fortune i couldn’t tell which way was up, I went to a balance specialist and the majority of it got better right away but some effects lingered on and pop up at different times, on my boat, on the mountain a couple times if I was walking and looking all around and up in my treestand. It’s only momentarily once I get grounded again I’m good. I feel like once you get it once it’s always there.

Reviving this. I just got it Saturday. I was out bird hunting and remote camping. I was scared it was food poisoning or dehydration or stomach flu. No fun, feels like I went on the Tea Cup Ride a few times too many. Damn

The older you get, some folks will have crystals form in the fluid in the inner ear. Then, when you move your head to look up, they shift out of place and this can cause extreme vertigo. It is very easily treatable by a trained physical therapist who can move your head through a specific pattern of motion in order to move the crystals to a place where they won't bother you. This is called the "Epley Maneuver", as mentioned by another poster earlier in this thread. It is easy, fast, and it works.

Here's text on the condition from Mayo Clinic:

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). BPPV occurs when calcium crystals in your inner ear — which help control your balance — are dislodged from their normal positions and move elsewhere in the inner ear. BPPV is the most common cause of vertigo in adults. You might experience a spinning sensation when turning in bed or tilting your head back to look up.

I got it when we were running bear hounds. Came on suddenly. Got out of the truck and started feeling dizzy. long story short, couldn't walk straight, started puking. They brought me to the hospital. Diagnosis.....vertigo. Still dealing with it 16 months later, but not debilitating like when it first hit.

I did try the epley maneuver, but didn't feel it helped at all. I'm going to give it another shot

In the summer one day I got really dizzy, it came on fast. I was so dizzy I couldn't walk, I puked a bunch, even laying down I was super dizzy. Long story short, they diagnosed me with vestibular neuritis. Basically a nerve from one of my ears got an infection and my brain stopped receiving signals from that inner ear. I had to do a bunch of therapy to retrain my brain to function without the input from that ear. The first couple weeks were pretty miserable but I'm pretty much back to normal now.

I didn't even know this was a thing until it happened to me.

Antihistamine is a possibility to reduce the vertigo. Dramamine too.

I had it for a while - was infrequent and ultimately faded away over time (couple of years), but boy, was that something.

I had it so bad once 2 weeks after hitting a tree in an endurocross race. Was so bad I thought I had a tumor, was sick to my stomach. They prescribed me some seasickness meds, cured that. Then had me do those movements, head left hold, head right hold etc, bed rest, took about 2 weeks to clear up. I was literally walking like a drunk on a boat stumbling at work before I threw in the towel and went to doctor

I got it a few years ago and it out me out for a week. I noticed I was dizzy on a Friday after getting home, Saturday I worked on the house and felt drunk the whole day and didn’t know what was going on. My wife took me to the ER Sunday when I stumbled and fell a few times and turned out to be vertigo caused by a sinus infection. Got some meds and took the week off but I couldn’t walk straight and there was no way I was going to drive and try working on a ladder while I had that going on. I did the exercises mentioned above and at first didn’t feel like it did anything but after a few times a day and the sinus infection cleared up I was back to normal.

I too was experiencing a lot of dizziness years ago that was mostly associated with head movement. The more or faster I moved my head, either side to side or up & down, the worse it was. It came on slow and increasingly got worse over several years. To the point where I decided I better get it checked out. The Dr.'s initial thoughts were an inner ear thing or something like that. Couldn't figure it out so sent me to a specialist. The specialist seemed sort of perplexed too so he said let's get an MRI to rule out the worst case scenario first. Well, the worst case scenario was exactly what was going on. I had a golf ball sized brain tumor on my cerebellum. I was into surgery by the next week for a craniotomy. That was in 2009. My follow up scans have all been clear up until a few months ago where they discovered the tumor is back. Only pea sized at this point. I had a round of radiation treatment September 1st. Waiting 6 months for my next MRI to see if the radiation is working.

Not trying to scare anyone... just thought I'd throw it out there that this is a possibility and not to just assume it's an inner ear thing. Get it checked out. An MRI will tell the tale...
