Velocity Test: Recurve vs Longbow, both 45#

Set up the chrono and did a little test. Samick Discovery 45#, vs Galaxy Black Ridge 45#. Tested using a 600 grain arrow.

So the longbow was in the low 160s and the recurve right around 180fps? Does the longbow have a similar grip or do you lose a little draw length compared to the recurve?

The longbow grip is a bit lower.

I wouldn't expect anything other than that result. A one piece longbow vs an ILF isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison.

Mostly the bow design explains the speed difference but I wonder how much difference that little bit of draw length you give up with the lower wrist grip makes.

That's a good point. I never really considered that, but the lower grip probably gives up a bit of DL.

That's right. I've always known the longbow is the slower design. I just wanted to quantify that with two bows I have on hand. Thought it was share worthy.

Bought a custom,60" Bob Lee TD longbow a few years ago.... 47#'s
Vs
A Handle Bear Kodiak TD,60" with exactly the same poundage on our scale.

Shot,side by side through our chrono. They were in effect the same speed.... +- a cpl FPS. The Bear had old(user) limbs with new micarta tips,running FF.

That's a good point. I never really considered that, but the lower grip probably gives up a bit of DL.

I know I lose about a half inch going from my recurve (Southwest Spyder XL, mid/high wrist) to my longbow, an ASL with a straight grip. I'm guessing you're losing more like 1/4" or so with your longbow.

I did something like that a while back.

Samick Discovery R3 Long limbs. 30# vs 45#. 576 grain arrow.

Average of 6 arrows with each limb:
30# R3 Long limbs - 165 fps
45# R3 Long limbs - 189 fps
