Going through my reload powders and it seems I have a bit of Varget. I don't have any load data and the only quick search internet recipe I found is for 35.5 of Varget behind a 143 gr ELD-X.

I'm trying to come close to Hornady Precision Hunter factory as the Kimber Montana likes them.

Any suggestions for Varget? My other option is a limited amount of IMR 4350. Not sure what's available locally right now.

Varget is going to be on the lower end of the velocities for that load. StaBALL 6.5, Superformance, Big Game, Hunter, RL17, Hybrid 100v, and 4000 MR would all get you speeds over 2,700 according to Hornady load data.

Thanks for that @A382DWDZQ and @VernAK.

The advertised speed of the Precision Hunter factory ammo is 2700 and my CDS is calibrated to that so I'm not too concerned about pushing it to faster limits. Guess I better hit the local store and see what powder is available... and if I have to sell a kidney to buy some. :)

I have a IMR 4350 load that I did my best to match factory rounds with. 41.4 grains of IMR 4350 gave me an average that matches the box stuff through my chronograph at 2685 fps

You better get a least a half pound of RL26 for that 🤣

Varget is great for the 6.5 creed, not sure about with the hornady stuff (I use reloader 17 for those).

IMR 4350 will get you to 2700+ fps according to Hornady data; Varget tops at 2600 fps (again, according to Hornady data).

Varget works really well for bullet weights up to and including 130gr. It’s burn rate is a bit too fast to get best velocities from 140s and heavier.

38.0 grains will give me 2870 fps using 124-grain Hammer Hunters. 22-inch barrel, 1/8 twist, .2ish three-shot groups.

Mine did not like any of the Ramshot stuff. Actually I haven't found a rifle I own that does. Only tried Big Game and Hunter though. I rebarreled my 6.5 to .308 but the best load I found for it was with 4350.

During the you couldn't find H4350 anywhere time frame I started trying R16 and H4831sc. Both worked really well. I used Varget for light coyote bullets and did OK. Recently picked up a jug of Staball 6.5 and it looks promising so far.

Varget and the 124g hammer hunters is a winning combination. I’d have to check my data but I believe I load 40g varget for 29xx fps with the 124g hammer hunter. I get great accuracy with that load too.
