Anyone have experience using the mini Sabre vanes? I will be shooting mechanical braodheads for deer

I have a pack of the mini, ended up not using them.


Tried the full size, followed the directions, didn't hold on very well.

Life is too short for me to deal with complications getting vanes to stick.

They're a good vane. Shooting mechanicals you will likely be just fine. Were you to move to fixed blade BHs, I think you would want to move to the full sized Sabres, or the new Iron Will vanes.

What is the hunting conditions you'll be using them in? What mechanicals?

The reason I ask is some mechanicals have a lot of exposed blade that doesn't make them that much better in flight than a small vented fixed. If you're shooting close then you can get about anything to work. I lean towards more vane control almost always as you're not gaining anything tangible with the small vane unless it's incredibly windy like in the plains. Which should definitely be a consideration if that's the case.

For western hunts that might get longer shots and windy - a small 3 fletch with a mechanical that has little surface area is a really good option.

If inside 50 yards then drag shouldn't be much of a concern. Midwest whitetail wind drift isn't the concern it is with other western hunting like mulies or antelope. I'd go full size DCA or something like a AAE 26 profile in 3 fletch. Depending on the mechanical a lot of them fly barely better than a vented small fixed blade and still need a good amount of fletch. Anything with much exposed blades needs a .5" tall 3 fletch in my opinion. Think Rage style.

I've played around with this extensively for both fixed and mechanicals with several dozen configurations. If wind drift is a concern then going to a micro arrow, glue in mechanical (or deep six) and 3 fletch mini sabres would gain you a hair more forgiveness in the wind.

But it's really not substantial to be honest - generally if it's windy enough to notice the difference your group is going to be defined by you getting pushed around by the wind trying to make the shot and not the arrow.

My only input is if you use them, use wraps. I bought some used RIP TKO's that had them and whoever put them on didn't use wraps. Holy **** I've never struggled that hard to remove vanes.
