I am looking at a 1962 pre 64 Model 70 chambered in 300 H&H. It has been professionally restored by a gunsmith in my area. It probably looks better than it did new. He has shot it and it appears to shoot good groups. Any thoughts on what would would be a fair price?

If I was buying, $750 if it’s been restored. Twice that if it was original and pretty nice. More for a super grade.

That one is going to be worth what someone will pay for it. With it being restored, that's the wildcard. The smith is going to price it based on how much time he has in it.

I don't know all of the intricacies of pre 64 M70s but I know I see some really nice examples at shows for 5k+. I also see some lefties that I would use just for the action for 1200 or so. I think that chambering is a bit rare.

Basically, you have to decide if it's worth it to you because I'm willing to bet it's going to be hard to get your money out of with it being professionally restored.

The fact that it's been restored could devalue it in some people's eyes.

Since it is restored, the correct answer is what someone is willing to pay for it. Un restored I would say $800-$1500 depending on condition. Restored can be less than $800 or more than $2000, depending on who did the work, how they did the work and what someone is willing to pay..

If purchased, I plan on hunting with it a little. I would not be buying it strictly for collector value. I would probably never sell it. The smith is familiar with the history of the rifle as it belonged to a regular customer of his for many years. I am just wanting a little input to make sure I don’t overpay.

I should comment that the smith owns a company that deals in fine firearms. They have a website with many rare and fine guns. I would mention the name but I am not sure if that is proper message board etiquette.
