Valley of Sub Legal Dalls

Thank you all for the comments. It was a wonderful hunt with my best friend. It motivated both of us to start planning for next year. My friend and his younger brother are going to get together and hunt. They lost their dad a year ago and are comming to the conclusion that they are not getting any younger either. In two hours I'll be sitting down with a buddy and going through a possible Brooks Range hunt over lunch.

One of the things that I did not bring up in my writing, but some may have noticed, is the lack of lambs. We saw three total lambs the whole trip. There also were not as many ewes as I would have expected for the habitat. In about 7 to 8 years there may not be a huntable popluation of legal rams in the TMA until the population recovers from the spring of 2013.

Ray is correct on the TMA lamb population. I spent a minute or two in the TMA this year and the outlook was very bleak. Did not see any old rams, I am putting in for permits elsewhere this year.

Really well written account of your hunt Ray. Sorry you did not connect. A very enjoyable and compelling story and great pictures.

Its hunt planning season now. I have handed out links to this story a couple of times since February. I paused this morning to reread it and reflect on the whole experience. Even though no sheep were harmed in the making of this story, there is value just the same. I wish the lurkers that come here from AOD the best of luck in their adventures this coming season.

Keep in mind, just because I didn't take a ram does not mean that you won't. Its more about timing, luck, and being able to make both work for you. No matter what, its a great experience.

Haha the "lurkers". Will you be sheep hunting again this year ray? I don't know how i missed this story when you first wrote it but its a good one! Thanks for the pics, i enjoyed looking at them as i haven't had the fortune to hunt TMA yet. Last year wasn't a good year in TMA but there were still some good rams taken. Like you said a lot of timing and luck is involved usually.

I am considering a walk in hunt if timing works out with my job and a friends job. Learned a bunch of stuff this winter about some road system stuff. Looks hard, but doable. Last year my luck was great but my timing was horrible. Hours late or a day late doesn't matter. Late is late. Just as bad as being too early and getting bored and moving too soon.
