I am trying to stay positive. You guys are helping a lot! I've got the truck loaded ready to go in the morning. I would leave now but we are going to have my sons 5th birthday party. It will be good! I forgot to mention that in all that mess of a hunt I missed my son's actual birthday for that guy just to screw it up. Here I go again. Sorry, I'm trying to stay positive guys. Thanx everybody it does mean a lot to me that there is good people out there that understand.

This happens every year to lots of guys and you can see on here why many of us end up hunting alone- not by choice but hard to go with someone who's not on same page.

Forget that guy, he's not a deer hunter, just a killer. Don't let him ruin your hunt. 3 months from now you will regret not giving it your all and you'll be even more bitter at him if you don't get out there now. The Y in DIY means yourself for good reason.

Get in the truck, go hunting, do your best, pace yourself and if you do get a buck, you'll probably be glad he's not there, drinking beer and missing home. I can't stand having guys like that anywhere near my hunting and neither should you. Hunting is 90% mental as you're finding out and the weak-minded only drag you lower.

Go! and quit worrying about what happened. Every minute your on here there's a toad buck somewhere out IN YOUR UNIT THAT YOU WON'T BE ABLE HUNT AGAIN FOR YEARS LIKELY. the clock's ticking against you, not him.

I had the same thing happen to me this year. I shot my deer the third day of archery season. My "friend" that was with me was not happy when I called him on the radio and told him I was packing one out. I beat him to camp and started to take my stuff down as I was headed back to get my deer taken care of. I picked him up on the road below camp to save him the walk up the road. He spiked his bow in the bed of my pickup, hoped in and through his poor pitty me party in the front seat. I just ignored it. Fast forward a couple of days and my other buddy shoots a deer. I knew my "friend" was going to be pissed when he found out we got another one. You guessed it, he wandered around camp, like a five year old that got his candy taken away. I called him out on it and told him to grow up and that you don't always get what you want in life and he needs to learn to be happy for people that are successful, even if he is not. He went on his spill about how he had the right to be frustrated that he didn't shoot a deer. His parting words to me where "you can go **** yourself." thats the last time I talked to him. I packed my stuff, got in my pickup and left.

It sucks but you got to love it.

Well I made the trip back out to utah early on thursday. I think I would've done it anyway but everybody's words of encouragement went along way with me and made it much easier than it would have been. I had a much more positive mindset and hunting fortitude due to all of you. For that I want to thank you all deeply. I want to give a very special thank you to MuleyFever. His help and generosity was above and beyond most people you come across in this world. A true class act for sure! Thank you!

I got camp set up in time to make a good evening glassing session in an area I really wanted to check out the first time I was there. So I hiked in and glassed till dark and all I turned up was some does. I decided to go there in the morning also since I had been seeing most activity in the early morning hours as opposed to the evening. So I got in there early and set up. It was pretty warm considering what time of year it is, but it was extremely windy. A long shot was out of the question. Again, all I could turn up was does. I decided to leave the mountain about 9:00am and head to another area that I had seen a bigger bodied 2x2 earlier in the week. He would make a great meat buck. At this point in time and only one more day to hunt I wasn't going to be picky. I told myself, next legal buck I see is going down. (I really could use the venison and success) So at about a mile from reaching my planned destination I came across 5-6 deer, I quickly glassed them up with my binos and one was a spike-fork buck! I positioned my self for a shot but it was too thick, so I moved 10yds or so and found an opening. The rest is history. It was an 80 yard shot, he ran about 20yds before expiring. I had succeeded in filling my tag (and my freezer) although he is probably he smallest rack I have he is a true trophy to me and one solo hunt I will not soon forget.

Most people would have given up so be proud you gave it your all and you were successful in one of the hardest units. I know some locals who have hunted that unit and not seen a buck. You basically got 2.

That sucks...I had the same thing happen to me on a Goat hunt in Montana a few years ago....hunt alone or only with someone you can trust to "be in it" with you the whole hunt. I have two guys now that are just as committed as I am and it is a LOT more fun hunting with them. Hope you get back down there and find a big buck. Good luck.

You know what Robby? I would have regretted it big time if I didn't go back. I am so glad I did though! It was also good that I ended up doing it solo. It was kind of like adding a building block to my confidence. I'll pull the curtain back a little and say that I even found myself getting a little emotional on that hillside alone. Generally, I am never like that. Something special happened and my mind let me know it. I really think it had a lot to do with all of you here on rokslide with the overwhelming support and the kick in the ass I needed in order to keep on going. Robby you are correct in saying that hunting IS 90% mental. I will say that your book has probably been the best partner on the mountain I've had this year! Thanx everybody!

That is very encouraging! I really do think that I can attribute that to so many years of hunting and trying to turn up bucks in California. It is extremely tough to do this in a general zone here. Every now and again it all comes together. Every year changes some due to hunting pressure or deer numbers. Either way thank you for the compliment!
