Utah Elk timing

Has anyone hunted private land in the Chalk creek, Kamas areas? I have an opportunity to get on a ranch from Nov-jan 31st, and I'm wondering what time during that span would be best for hunting. Or if it doesn't matter as much because it's private land and it's really more about weather and comfort while camping.

This is an invite for a DIY hunt for a cow and if it goes well and if I prove I'm a responsible hunter, I may be able to hunt a Bull in the future.

Use the snow to your advantage and it wouldn’t be hard to punch a tag on your first or second day.

Right on...that's what I was thinking too. The hard part is guessing when the snow comes, to catch the migration, or I could just choose a later date in Jan and assume there will be snow and the elk have already moved down.

Mid December would be a good bet.

Just remember, the later you go the more developed of a fetus you'll be most likely dealing with once you start field dressing a cow. I know a lot of people who don't do the late hunts anymore because of it. Something to keep in mind.

Gutless method avoids all that.

Hunt mid December to early January depending on weather. I hunt just above kamas. Are you on moon ranch?

Talked to a guy just a couple weeks ago who killed a cow, gutless method, and they commented on watching the fetus kicking inside the abdomen. Gutless doesn't completely avoid it.

Really appreciate you bringing that up. We ended up pivoting and taking an invite to hunt a ranch in Oregon in August...hopefully far from encountering that experience.
