What's on the agenda for spring backpacking, hunting and fishing trips? I'm headed out Friday for a weekend of native bookies up a couple blue lines. I'll take the shotgun along for the spring Turkey opener Saturday morning. I'll spend the rest of the time trying for some native brook trout and chilling around camp. I've got a pretty heavy duty camp packed in anticipation of rain, that seems to be the norm in this area. This trip will not be focused on miles, but instead on some time away from the race and R&R.

Backpack trout fishing for natives as well, turkey hunting (might even try backpack turkey hunting with some new gear), head south for some hog dogging, float the river and pick off a few smallies/musky. Maybe even commit to finally only using a fly rod this year on the river. We usually camp for 3-4 weeks during turkey season but I don't know if that will happen this year.

Turkey and a little more ice fishing
Man I've been dying to do some ice fishing the past couple years. I was in upstate New York in February of last year and saw all the people ice fishing. The guys on the job I was on up there had some pretty impressive photo evidence of their success through the ice.

Depending on what you are fishing for it can be a steady bite. Crappies and walleyes can be hit and miss, at least where I fish. Seems like you can get an hour of really good fishing and then all of a sudden, it completely shuts off.

I think walleye and crappie are just like that. I fish for both here in Virginia and that's the way they act for me too. We will do some crappie fishing under the lights next month and that always turns into sun down to sun up rounds. Patience is usually paid pretty good dividends.

Driving the family down to the in-laws in Holly Lake Ranch, east Texas, for Mother's day. I get to take my kids (3 and 5 years) out to look for squirrels and rabbits. We'll probably do a little fishing too. Alligators will be in season, but they are private land only so that probably won't happen.

Just got back from Texas turkey and hog trip. Going to Kentucky tomorrow for turkey opener. As soon as I tag out in Kentucky its off to Missouri to turkey hunt and then back to Indiana turkey season. Then off to trout fishing in Ky and Mo. Then to Montana/Wyoming. Retirement sucks!
Oh and I after I hunted in Tx I went to my coonass cousins and ran crawfish traps for a week. Lots of boiled crawfish

Spring bear soon. I honestly don't know how to find bear below 5000 feet where I hunt, so I'll have to wait another week or two for access.

In the meantime, chasing redband trout in the canyons, and reservoir fishing for crappie with my in-laws.
