How crowded is this unit usually? Me and a buddy are flying in sept19 to elk hunt. We have some topo maps and gps coordinates from a guy that had hunted it quite a bit, but hasnt been out in 5 years. Are we wasting our time?

I have only hunted elk 1 year and it was last year. What I will say is based on my limited experience everywhere is crowded. I hiked in 4.5 miles set up camp before opening day and an hour before dark I had 4 other guys pack in and set up by me. I also shot a cow opening morning hunting between 3 different groups. I think that just because there are a lot of people doesn’t mean you won’t be successful.

I've hunted it the last 2 years. Bow in 2017 and 1st rifle in 2018. Just like most OTC areas if it looks elky and is easily accessible it will be crowded. But you can find secluded areas if you look hard enough. Dont be afraid to move camp. If you're not seeing fresh elk sign, move on.

Elk numbers are down but it still gets quite a bit of pressure. They have lowered the cow tags by around 90% but It will take a few years to recover. Wilderness area seems to get quite a bit of pressure as well. Drainages along the Dolores River holds some elk if you can find one without people

Rode through there on my bike over the weekend -good amount of hunters, but not over concentrated. Judging from the amount of poop on the trail, good bit of horses in the area, though I never actually saw any horses.
