Hey guys. Just finishing up the final odds and ends for my CO 2nd rifle season. My buddy and I will be making the trek from PA/KY with bull and cow tags for unit 42. My uncle was out there last year on a mule deer tag and said the roads are in really bad shape, pretty much impassible in areas.

Anyway, he's putting all kinds of pressure on me to bring my atv, which I really don't want to do because I currently don't have a trailer and I'd prefer not to haul it in the bed all the way across the USA. But then again I don't want to not have it and tear up my truck trying to get to a good launch point.

Hoping that someone on here has hunted the area during archery this year and can let me know if I should bring my atv or not. Looking at hunting the Eastern section of 42.

I started my big game hunting life in unit 42 south of Silt 36 years ago. We always had the vehicles chained up on all four in there during the rifle seasons. Not sure I'd want to be on a quad in that stuff, I have pics of my truck somewhere that you can't even make out the truck because it's so caked up in mud from top to bottom. But I haven't hunted that area in probably 25 years now. Good luck. Used to be a great area back then, not sure about now.

Roads tend to be pretty rough there. Many of the smaller roads to oil/gas sites require an ATV once it starts getting wet.

Not sure exactly where you are headed up there, but the further you head east the rougher the roads can get. Had quite a few insurance claims from 42.

Have him rent you a trailer and split the gas then haul it out there. :)

BTW I have NO experience with that unit so can't help at all. Sounds pretty interesting with the roads.

Dumb question for Titan if you read this what type of insurance claims/stories have you had?

Lots of fender/bumper damage, either from rocks/holes or ice build up and chains. Broken windows from sliding into logs. Jammed a running board up into the side of a vehicle. Bent crossmembers and skid plates. Lost some tire sidewalls...there are a few roads that turn into solid rocks. Those areas will also tear up those cable type and light weight chains immediately. I don't think we ever had a year without some type of damage.

Then there is always rolling a suv off the side of the road.

The addition of ATV's really cut down on vehicle damage up there. I would suggest taking it with you. Spending $750 on a used trailer might be worth it if putting it in the bed worries you. The ATV's also cut down on travel time from camp to hunting spot with the roads being so rough.

Haha yea that all sounds horrible especially if I have to unwillingly extend my stay in CO to have my truck repaired to be roadworthy for the 24 hours back home.
