Well, muzzleloader season came and went without me being able to kill an elk this year. I had a ton of fun in the highcountry chasing elk for a week in the wilderness but now my freezer is empty and tag soup isn't very filling. The good news is that my younger brother has a 4th season rifle cow elk tag in unit 11. The problem is neither of us have ever hunted elk in unit 11 before and he picked up this tag as a sort of elk meat insurance hunt. I know its a pretty popular area for late rifle season, which leads me to my next question, has anyone here ever hunted unit 11 for elk? I'm trying to gather as much info about this hunt as possible because its our last opportunity to get elk meat in the freezer for our family for the winter. I may be able to get one weekend of scouting unit 11 during 3rd rifle season but thats 50/50 on being able to make that happen. Ideally, I'm hoping to find an area where we can hike into away from the roads and find elk. I have been doing as much internet scouting as possible but i'm not really sure what is good information and what is disinformation. Is anybody willing to share areas to check out or even areas to avoid during the 4th season hunt? We are definately not afraid to get into some rough country or of tough pack outs.
