Uncompahgre Puffy Pants Fit

Does anyone have experience with the First Lite Uncompahgre puffy pants?
I wear 36 Jeans and 38 Kuiu attack pants.
According to First Lites website I should wear a Large. But wondering if I should get an XL because they are for wearing stationary.
Thoughts?

I have the original uncompahgre in medium. I wear 34 jeans and 36 kuiu. They fit but just a bit small in the waste, no much room for layering, just a mid-weight base layer. I'm have a small belly, if not for that fit would be better.

Seems large would be good for you unless your going with a bunch of layers underneath. But if its that cold and your that layered up to stay warm, the Uncompahgre may not be the best choice

While I have no experience with them….
I was planning on using them as a stationary “overpant” while glassing. ie after a hike/climb to a glassing position, zip them over my attack pants and put my puffy coat on and get to glassing. Easy on easy off right over my pants.
Are you using them as a primary pant? They seem like they mite be pretty fragile for that

Same exact boat as you. Their large pants fit me very well. I'd start with the large. They should be made with some extra room for layering due to their use case.

I have a pair. I wear 34x34 jeans, I have a large. These fit well as an overlayer. I have a little room, but I would not at all say the pants are oversized on me. Depending on how those 36 jeans fit you, you might be better off in the xl, but I bet you could make either size work in a pinch. Ideal would be to buy two pairs if you can return one, and just plan to keep whichever fits better.

Yeah, down pants would pack smaller (these are about football-size when packed) but these are ok especially given the price. Id probably buy them again doing it all over.

OP, I wear 34 jeans and 36 in Kuiu pants. I ordered the XL in these and was swimming in them, felt like MC Hammer. I had to return them and get the L. Wore them this last year over base layers and Attack pants and they fit well but maybe still a little loose in the waist.

@Leo45 I would not recommend the Uncompahgre pants. The insulation is very unimpressive, and they have basically no insulation in the front of the knees, which is one of the most exposed spots when sitting to glass.

I'm searching for a new pair of puffy pants myself. I would definitely recommend getting a down puffy instead of the synthetic. It makes a big difference in terms of weight, warmth, and packability. Here's the options that I've considered.

The montbell ones are nice, but not having a zipper is a big dealbreaker.

You can order a custom pair from GFG. The only concern I have is I'm not sure about their down waterproof treatment. I think the "DWR coating" is only on the exterior fabric.

The Kuiu or Stone Glacier ones are probably the best in terms of off-the-shelf IMO. The Stone Glacier has A LOT more down fill, so I'd go with that one. SG also uses probably the 2nd best waterproof-treated down on the market IMO in the AlliedFeather HyderDry.

The only reason why I wouldn't go with the Stone Glacier is if you can possibly hold off until AlliedFeather's newer waterproof treated down makes it into the down puffy pants market. It is called ExpedDry, and it is a PFC-free down with gold particles bonded to the down. I think it will be the gold standard in down treatment going forward. The only company I've found that is currently using ExpedDry is Katabatic in their men's Tincup jacket, which I have, and it is awesome.... but I'm hopeful that since Stone Glacier is already using AlliedFeather's HyperDry down, they will be the first ones to incorporate it into their pants... even further cementing the Grumman as the go-to down pants in my book.

Sorry for the novel. Wanted to give some background as to why I'd choose the Grumman for now.

For the most part I wear mine under my Solitude bibs, it gets cold here.
