As the title states, my battle buddy and I won two Wyoming General Elk tags last Thursday. I've been a long time lurker on Rokslide, but being a flat lander with minimal opportunities to chase elk, regretfully, this is my first time to join the discussion.
I've been an avid bowhunter since I was a kid, mostly chasing whitetails and turkeys here in Oklahoma while dreaming of bugles. I had my first opportunity to tackle a DIY elk hunt in Oregon 2 years ago, and was very fortunate to call in a nice 5x5 coastal Rosie and punch my first elk tag. My buddy has hunted whitetail his entire life as well, mostly with a rifle in hand. The two of us served together in Fallujah and Ramadi in 2004 and have remained close friends ever since , which was a big part of why we were selected for this contest. This will be our first time for any kind of adventure together since Iraq. Given the short notice and his limited experience with bow, we plan to take our rifles into the Western region and see if we can get it done. Hoping to beat the snow, we're aiming to get into a unit with an Oct 1 start date. I've narrowed it down to a handful of units, and since this site and community has always proven to be a great resource, I will be scouring the archives for as much information I can find. If anyone has any insight or suggestions to help us make this trip successful all PM's will be humbly, and greatly appreciated. Glad to be a part of this community and looking forward to joining the discussion.
