Turkey broadheads, to decapitate or not...

I haven't hunted turkey before. Headed to Nebraska this spring.

I shoot NAP Killzone on elk, not sure if a head chopper or sticking with the Killzone is the best idea for turkeys.

Advice appreciated.

Relevant question: How do you practice/sight in with the big head chopper heads?

I see no need for a big chopper head. I just use my whitetail heads. A Slick Trick Magnum through the Wing butt, never had them go far.

I way prefer to use a large cutting mech, just like the Killzone, over a head chopper. They fly much better and you have a bigger margin for error. The larger the cut the better. Rocket Hammerheads and Grim Reaper Whitetail Specials are also great...anything with a lot of cut.

I'm not a head chopper guy. If I'm gun hunting, then head shot, absolutely. But that's also because you can get little to no penetration with shot on a turkey body shot. Archery, it's center mass and while I don't like a huge broadhead, I may go with a larger cut like an old school Vortex (2.75") because arrow penetration on a turkey body usually isn't a problem.

True story.

I once had a turkey walk in to my setup and killed him. When I got to him that bird had a hole in the side of him the diameter of a pop can. Reeked of gangrene. It almost had to be a shotgun wound. I don't know how that bird even survived yet he was walking fine as if nothing was wrong and must have been for a few days for the wound to get that infected.

i use my big grim reapers on turkey. i get the occasional pass thru, but acutally hope the arrow stays in that bird. they run slower dragging the hardware around.

i try not to aim centermass since the vitals are not in the middle when the bird is all puffed up.
