TSA locks for Pelican 1750

Do you lock the doors of your house at night? Do you think that will stop someone who really wants to break into your house? You may as well leave the door wide open because they can get in if they want to.

Am I following your logic correctly?

TSA locks are easily opened by anyone with a TSA key. Non-TSA locks are much more difficult to get around. Is it going to stop a determined thief? No. Is it going to deter a casual thief? Absolutely.

Who exactly will this "casual thief" be between the TSA and it physically going on the airplane? Firearms are in a secure area from the time you drop them off until you get them from the luggage agent at your arrival airport. If somebody behind the scenes is going to steal it I would think it would go case and all. And to be honest with you, I haven't locked my house in 15 years and my parents haven't locked theirs in 40. Never had a problem and if I ever do then that's why I pay an insurance premium. Living rural, if somebody is going to break in they are going to break in. If they were to come in while I am home that might open up a whole new level of problems for them so it would be a risk/reward thing. Hell, I even leave the keys in my vehicles in the yard in case somebody breaks down and needs to get somewhere.

I travel multiple times a year with firearms and am only stating what I feel works best for me. I have no problem if others wish to do things differently as it doesn't effect me in the least.

Maybe we should ask the question this way: who has ever had a firearm stolen from a case that non-TSA locks? With TSA locks?

My sense is, like with many things, people on this site take things to the Nth degree when it isn’t practically necessary, and the TSA vs non-TSA lock discussion is a moot point.

I think the reason for the discussion is because sometimes the dude at TSA doesn't follow the guidance that's directly on the website, or the guidance isn't clear or is otherwise incomplete. Those are good subtopics for discussion.

TSA locks were not allowed until more recently (last 3-4 years), which seems to be in part where the confusion comes in. Guys relying on previous rules which have been superseded.

The process/facilities also varies from airport to airport and apparently from airline/TSA employee to employee as well, and guys who have not experienced that may not be aware.

How many firearms and how many with TSA versus non-TSA locks? What you posted doesn't answer the questions asked.

I like sliced brisket better than chopped.

Because apparently some people want to have a conversation about unrelated stuff.

Lol...the point is that TSA employees should not be trusted with your possessions but please go ahead and ignore the facts and trust them with (more than likely) the most expensive items you will ever travel with....makes sense to me!!!!

Right...people that regularly steal from the public would NEVER steal an expensive firearm! Lol!

So, you’ve never had anything stolen by a TSA employee either?

Seems like a simple answer to me--just expect it to be an effed up process and plan for that, and you'll be fine. My own TSA/check-in experience flying with firearms hasnt ever been consistent, so I just expect inconsistency. I simply add an extra hour at check in and expect it to be eye-rollingly humorous. I request to do the inspection with the tsa agent, so far that's never been an issue and several times it's provided valuable humor ("how do you tell if this is loaded"?). I bring my padlocks to lock it up, and I have a set of TSA locks inside the case in case someone demands I use those (only happened once). I put a big note inside that says "dear TSA agent--if you need to cut this open new locks located here, plse call me if any problem" with my cell#--never had that come in handy yet, but I have had it come in handy traveling with other TSA-restricted items, so I run with it. I use 4 locks because my pelican 1750 can be pried open just enough to get small stuff out if you only use 2 locks. I also duct-tape the latches shut after inspection because I have had the case arrive latches-open with only the locks holding it shut as often as not, and again something thin like a cleaning rod could drop or be pulled out if the locks allow it to open a fraction of an inch. I truly think based on the damage my case has seen that a few airline employees handling what is clearly a rifle case make a political statement by trying to send your gun into orbit while loading it on the plane, so I just assume it's going to get the snot beat out of it and messed-with as much as I make it possible to do so. So far, so good and fingers crossed for next time.

I'll be flying out of Boston in the fall for the first time with a firearm. planning to have a 1750 pelican and my rifle, non-TSA locks. It's literally the most nerve wracking part for me right now.

Don't sweat it, bud. Flew to from Michigan to Alaska last month for a bear hunt. First time flying with a firearm. It's a far less hassle than you think.

So very this. My home airport does the TSA screening behind closed doors so I just get to the airport 20 mins early in case they ask for my keys to open the case. They never have. In airports I have flown through where they do the TSA screening in a public area, you just walk your bag over there, they dig through it for 30 seconds, and you are on your way. Lose sleep over it if you feel like you must, but no reason to.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’ve flown with rifles and never worried about someone/TSA stealing them.

What I did worry about is some overzealous dogooder at TSA or the airlines pulling out an inch thick regulation and telling me I’m not in compliance with the reg and will not be able to ship my rifle. This person could cause me to miss my flight and significantly mess up my hunt.

I think that’s how a lot of these questions start. We’re trying to do the right thing for the right reason, but we’re up against an unmoving bureaucracy staffed by people that really don’t care

Yeah I hear you guys. It's just that MA isn't the most gun friendly state but I'm sure we'll be just fine. I'm not sure how/where they do the screening for firearms at Logan
