Trucks and coolers

We will be headed to Colorado this October, I was wondering what others do with their coolers. Do you take a trailer, truck with cap or just a tonneau cover, or just open bed and lock the coolers? We will be packing in for 5 days or so and leaving the truck at the trail head or side of road. We are coming from the east so its a long drive.

I am leaning away from a trailer as its just coolers and seems like more a of chance for something to happen on the the 26 hour driver there or back.

Out of sight is always best, so under a cover is ideal. If not, run a steel cable through handles and such and padlock to the truck - especially if they are good coolers that might temp an otherwise honest individual. Should be enough to stop opportunistic thieves, but honestly I think everyone there is kind of in the same boat so i don't hear of too much trouble. Other option is to stash them off in the woods before you get to the TH. Just far enough off the road/trail that they can't be seen and are unlikely to be stumbled upon. Hide with brush if needed, and mark on your GPS so that you can find them again in the dark.

We built a 2" blue board cooler for the bed. It will keep ice for 4-5 days if need be. We use high speed aluminum tape to hold it together. We keep a list of nearby places to get ice and places that will cold store elk if we get one early.

I just leave them in the back seat area of truck, crew cab, never had a problem. Have seen many people leave them in the bed without issue as well but anything can happen just isn't as likely as you may think.

But driving as far as you are I think a topper or cap would work great as you may have more issues with stuff going missing at your stops in between where you live be and CO.

I travel to Colorado from the east also and have had no problem leaving coolers either in the truck bed or at camp. I pulled a trailer one year with a chest freezer and a couple coolers on it (only had an suv at the time) and decided I was never taking another trailer if I could avoid it. The area I hunt in can be a bit rough on a truck much less a loaded trailer. Like others have said though if you put some type of cable through the handles you will likely deter most otherwise honest people from messing with your stuff.
