Hi all, im looking at getting a tripod and i dont have much experience with tripods at all, other then the Bog Deathgrip. All though i didnt mind it, i would need to switch out the head for the ball head. The plan for a tripod for me would be to run about a 15 pound rig for thermal hunting, in 22-250 AI. Any recommendations, advice, or things i should look for when getting a tripod? Thanks all!

Have you shot off a tripod before?
How far will you be carrying it?
Standing?
Sitting?
Will you put ARCA on your rifle forend?
Do you want to shoot directly off the tripod or off a bag on the tripod?

Are you going to be shooting from standing, or from kneeling/sitting? That will have a big impact on what you need.

I'm selling a few tripods if you want to take a look, but happy to offer advice even if you don't want one of these.

I have shot off of a tripod before.
I will be carrying it between 1-150 yards.
99% standing.
Might add arca, idk yet, gotta find a tripod first.
Directly off the tripod, im used to a bog deathgrip with hog saddle.

Its going to be with a thermal rig

Get a 2 section tripod with Inverted legs. Very stable and easy to adjust setting up or on the go because the adjustment is always within reach.

Use a plate with bag on top like this for quick adjustment and easy tracking of moving animals. (I make it and it is excellent for quick engagements.)

Meant to add, if you eventually go with ARCA, then the RRS Anvil 30 is the standard.

I prefer the motorcycle handle style by Leofoto.

Which tripod would you recommend with those qualities? Minus the plate and bag obviously.

I run this one, but they make two other models that have heavier legs and are stiffer. Never seen the Fat Boy version, but it looks similar. If I were buying it for your purposes, I would buy for stability and get the largest diameter legs for best stability standing.

Recently bit the bullet and bought two vets recon. Inverted 2 section. Extremely stable and having the adjustment in reach is very handy.
