Looking for a lightweight tripod head that is Picatinny capable, and can still be used for spotting scope as well. Needs to work with my Slik 634 CF

Thx!

I imagine you could take a Slik adapter plate, tap and thred the bottom of a picatinney rail, then screw the adapter plate to the rail. Shouldn;t be very hard to do. But to my knowledge nobody makes one. Fatrascal.

I use a BT quick release & Precision Rifle Solution optics mount as well as a couple standard vortex mount adapters.

Plenty of options these days for tripod heads with Arca style plates or rails, seems Picatinny is likely going by the wayside.

We’re you about to mount the BT adapter to your tripod head plate fairly easy? Did you need to drill and tap it?

The BT & PRS items both mounted directly to my standard vortex plate.

I have also used the BT quick release mount with an outdoorsmans plate, trying to shoot off a pan head definitely isn't ideal though. I am sure a ball head is much better. Really Right Stuff makes ball heads that clamp to both arca plates and pic rails. They make great stuff but you certainly pay a hefty price for it. I would love to get a tripod/ball head combo from them in the future.

The only one I know of is the rrs anvil. It’s a ball head, 3/8” threaded so you would need a 3/8” stud on your tripod. But In my opinion it’s a heavy duty ball head and will not compliment the slik very well.

The other option is to grab like above an adapter and run it. Or mount an arca plate on your rifle. Or go deep for an rrs setup and deal with the ball head for glassing.

Unfortunately a perfect lightweight option does not exist. I tried the slik 624 with a a saddle, and eventually a hard mount and it was not solid at all with a rifle on it and was more difficult than it needed to be for the distance I was comfortable shooting off it from.

The RRS BH-40-SC and BH-55-SC both also can connect to a pic rail, I have been looking at RRS quite a bit recently. I think these two heads would be a little better for glassing than the anvil because you can pan and adjust tension a little more finely. They are supposed to be coming out with a tripod designed more with backpack hunters in mind also which should be a bit more weight conscious called the ascent. But ya you gotta go deep for one no doubt.

I use a Field Optics Research head on my Slik, and it works great for shooting at extended distances. Leaves a little to be desired with the spotter, but still works well enough for me to avoid bumping up to a more expensive head

Forgot about those, maybe a better option as well, I don’t think they had the specific picatinny when I ordered my anvil.

I did a lot of glassing off the anvil last year, it’s a lightweight and compact heads. I had no problems with it, if your used to a high end pan head you might not like it but it certainly didn’t hold me back with binos or a spotter. Shooting off it is really nice though.

@Lawnboi

That is good to know, I am probably going to pick up that ascent whenever it comes out. I will call and chat with them about the anvil vs one of the other ballheads. I currently run the outdoorsmans pan head and I do love glassing with it. Sucks to shoot off though, I think I will find a happy balance with a ball head. The spartan davros is also intriguing.

Iv heard they are making amore hunting oriented tripod as well but haven’t seen anything. Currently running another brand tripod as I just didn’t have the cash to go all in when I got the anvil. I’d like to get into an rrs tripod sometime in the next couple years.

I haven't been able to find much on the new tripod either other than the link below, gives a little info on it. I follow RRS on facebook and they have mentioned not being able to release new products due to the corona virus issue impacting their suppliers. They have also directly mentioned the travel tripod "ascend" and that they were planning to release it soon. I have too much time on my hands working from home and the internet shopping is taking a toll haha.

RRS makes such nice equipment, and I have used the anvil 30 (not mine) a bit and it was so nice to shoot from. The difficulty for me when it comes to RRS is first of all, the price, and second, none of it is very lightweight. My wife would be the first to say I’m not opposed to spending money, but damn $440 is a lot to part with for a tripod head! I’m thinking I’ll go the BT route and use one of my Vanguard plates or Benro plates (using a Slik Sprint mini w/Vanguard PH1 or Slik 624 CF w/Benro S2) depending on which tripod I’m using. I also suffer from severe ounce counting which hinders my ability to find exactly what I’m looking for : )

I thought I could get away with a slik benro setup, but after getting into it with a rifle on top I was better off shooting from my trekking poles or pack stood up. It just was not solid. I see the appeal to a tripod setup but find myself weighing if I really need it or not on hunts. Most hunts it’s just been easier to make a position out of other things than pull out the tripod. Nice to have as an option but not nearly as awesome as it seems to be. Even with my heavy setup, and a hard mount, it still took some serious practice to get it steady. Even with my heavy guns it’s still not close to prone. Good tool for the toolbox but Not the golden egg I thought it was going to be.

Stationary setups I can see being very nice with the tripod

I think more guys would benefit from something like a pint sized game changer bag thrown over whatever tripod head they have, allows a lot of adjustment, especially on a light gun that isn’t very barrel heavy. Iv done a lot of plinking with the bag on the tripod head and it works very well with hunting guns being able to slide the rifle forward over the Mag well/bdl for balance

Dang 1400$. I’m out, I’ll haul the extra pound for one of the 900$ tripods!

@Lawnboi

I have done the exact same as you when it comes to the bag on top of the tripod, and it does work really well, I might just continue that practice and roll with it for hunting situations. It’s still winter here, and I’m doing what I do every year at this time, think too much about how I can improve on my kit : )

I have followed two vets sporting goods for awhile, quality products at prices substantially better than RRS. This popped up on their Instagram tonight...

After taking the plunge. I'm very happy with the RRS tripod and heads. But a note of caution with the SC plate, that takes both the picatinny rail and the RRS plate. Since it is a lever throw, the tension on the jaws is preset. It worked ok on one picatinny rail. Was loose on another and very tight on a third.

I've subsequently gone to all arca swiss plates, but the issue remains, that they aren't all created equal, some are tighter then others.

I'll be modifying my 14 series tripod down to a weight of 650grams. With their smallest head that I use primarily for glassing, total weight is 775grams (28 ounces).
