Dumb question, but if you use trekking poles as your center pole why can't you just pull them out, collapse the shelter, and use the poles during the day - replacing them at the end of the day?

If it was a windy day and the shelter was really whipping in the wind it could cause damage to the shelter. The pole is what keeps everything taut.

Where we camp for sheep & goats there are no sticks to cut for poles. Heck there is'nt enough twigs to even start a fire. :D
If it rains on a collapsed tent the water will pool in all the low spots, with a very high probability of dripping through onto what ever previously dry gear is underneath.;)

Good post. I am also giving the floorless Tipi a try this year, and was wondering the same thing since I don't use treking poles. I'm hoping the stick method works well. Worst case scenario I guess I'll just have to pack one pole, but hoping I can avoid the weight.

I use limbs to pitch my super tarp, stash the poles in the tarp as I don't use them on the actual hunt. I use them to pack camp in, then I will use them when I get an animal down to assist with the pack out. The limbs also serve as good hangers to hang wet gear to dry with the stove over night.
