Was planning to use my Helinox groove lock pole with extender since I carry the pole anyhow. Is there any advantage to using a carbon fiber pole instead? Mostly concerned about the trekking pole failing in strong winds. Anyone had experience with poles breaking?

I like using my trekking because it's adjustable as I raise it to combat condensation. Plus, if you're carrying it anyways then you might as well use it. The only downside is that you can't use one of your trekking poles.

You shouldn't have a problem using a trekking pole. Even in heavy winds, I can't see the trekking pole failing, because the weight is being distributed straight down vertically on the pole. In really heavy blows you will see the pole shake a little, but that's about it. I'm not familiar with the trekking poles you're using but my carbon fiber BD poles are much stouter than my Ruta Locura CF shelter pole.

I used my trekking poles (linked) last year in Idaho for 9 days and didn't have a problem at all. Didn't encounter any really bad weather to thoroughly test it...although I don't see it being an issue either way.

Thanks guys. Weight wise it's a no brainer because I carry a pole anyway. I just assumed the cf pole would be more bombproof vs the adjustable trekking pole because there's no moving parts or locking mechanisms to potentially fail. Maybe that's not the case. The helinox poles supposedly have a very good locking mechanism, just need to use them more to develop some faith in them.

The only down side to using your trekking pole for your shelter is if you want to use the pole and leave the shelter up. I use my poles everyday while hunting, so I carry poles for my megatarp incase I do not want to break camp every morning.
