Trap... but for what???

When I was turkey hunting in the national forest this spring I came across this set up. It was in an area of severe pine beetle damage and my best guess is the funnel trap has something to do with studying the pine beetles. I called the national forest service office, but they were operating with a skeleton staff and the receptionist did not really know anything about them. I also tried to contact the company that made the trap, but it appears they are no longer in business. Anybody here have any qualified information?
