Thought some of your guys here might enjoy this one. I've personally bounced around how I stay fit for backpack hunts and hunting in general. It's always easier in person, but Scott explained his philosophy in a way to me that made a lot of sense. In many other discussions I have had on the fitness front, things got convoluted quickly. Hope it's helpful.

I'll give it a watch! Uphill Athlete altered how I trained a few years back and I am reaping the rewards still today with the principles his book showed me

I have used uphill athletes and their mountaineering plans to get ready for two sheep hunts. Scott is a wealth of knowledge and glad to see him getting some recognition in hunting.

This is excellent info - thanks for sharing.

I just signed up for one of their training programs. I plan on doing an Ultra this summer and their stuff makes the most sense. The plan looks way better then what I would have come up with on my own.

Awesome podcast. I have shared it a bunch. Having just finished my first ultra I’m a believer in what he says. There is no amount of CrossFit or Gym Bro leg days that prepare you for moving in the mountains like trail running in Zone 2.

Are their training programs anything special? I have the book and it basically tells you how to lay out a training plan with their methods. What does paid coaching get you that you can’t make yourself (assuming you have trained and made programs before and aren’t a total beginner)???

Years ago CTS (Carmichael training systems) who was coaching lance Armstrong started doing online training plans for people, you’d pay by month or by plan depending on goals like bicycle racing, endurance mountain biking, triathlons etc. a girl I knew spent a lot of money on that and had all her plans printed out. When I saw them all I could think was that I could have slapped a plan like that together in 30 minutes. Maybe o should have been coaching people and charging 200.00/month.

Actually stumbled upon this today and are about 20 min into it.

The training programs are ok if you don't know were to start on programming. But, the book is far better.

Coaching gets you fresh ideas when you run out and confidence in the plan.

I used it after I over trained myself. I dug a whole and needed help digging out as I had a race in 2.5 months. Some things I wouldn't have done (incline hiking on a treadmill) and now I use them because they worked well. Some things I had a good idea of what needed to be done, but lacked confidence in my assessment.

If I had the money, for convenience I would use a coach all the time, but I've been self coaching and doing decent enough at the moment.

I like their training plans. You can buy a plan and just start it when ever. No coaching needed. I like a plan and just execute the plan. It’s easier for me at this stage of life. When I have more time I could come up with something. But not now. This summer I did an Ultra in Utah and my trail running here in Wyoming was good. But when I compare how I trained for the race vs this plan, it’s way different. So I’m excited to see if there is a big change or just a minor improvement.

If you wanted to have coaching they of course offer it for a monthly fee or yearly fee.

Appreciate you sharing it man. thanks

Right on, glad it’s working for you, maybe I’ll look into eventually, I’ve been thinking of getting on a more specific program at some point. Although in reality just doing what I do and focusing more on weighted hiking would probably square me away.

Uphill hiking on treadmills is great, that’s like me go to when I’m at hotels, get it as steep as I can, go like 3.5mph and go for 45 minutes.
